He's a American devout Christian. He's right sided but I wouldn't say right wing. 

He was an extremely clever man and could out debate pretty much anyone who dared to speak with him, so used that as his thing to be like a viral influencer.  He'd hold debates and ask people to try and win their argument. Inevitably these were normally taken up by left minded folk or left side extremists who wanted to be "the one" that outsmarted him. 

Inevitably people became upset and outraged and couldn't handle that after a while people began to agree with him. 

For reference I've never once seen him spout any real hatred, or been aggressive.. in fact on most the polar opposite
