Was a strange time round that villa and Preston time. Deffo a big malaise in our support. Few of the lowest crowds at The Reebok during that time. Dont remember many big aways either untill things kicked on with Sam.

Yes very true, clubs go through these cycles boro are a good example had shocking followings for a period but in the last 5 years or so they’ve travelled well

Pretty well with crowds.

God yes there’s no way on Gods earth I’d describe the Watford performance using any positive language!

As bad as were that day, its still annoying that the goal that made the difference, that bicycle kick, was such a fluke to find its way into the top of the net.  We were poor, they were no better, the 2nd goal was fairly irrelevant being on the break late on.  Nick Wright only scored 11 career goals, and no more for Watford after that.

If we didn't have a dwarf in goal it gets saved easily

Just had a little look through our league results following EFL Trophy games.

We haven’t lost a game yet after one of these. We’ve won all bar one (drew with Bristol after Barrow game). And on 2 occasions went on little runs of good results

Something I’ve debated with @Johnnyrotten and others with this season, this competition has been very good for us so far

- it’s helped (in the main) keep a large squad happy and playing

- it’ been the platform for players breaking into first 11 - Thomason and Sheehan spring to mind

- it’s helped build up the confidence of players taking that form into league games - Charles the obvious one here.

- And there’s nothing like competitive matches for putting game-plans into place.

Long may the run continue to Wembley!

Fair points generally, I'm not doubting there are benefits of a cup run.  Lots has been said against this cup also that are valid points, that don't need repeating.

My (inevitable!) counter arguments:

- the main reason we haven't lost a game after an EFL Trophy game is they were all relatively kind fixtures, that we don't normally lose: 4 home games against Charlton, Lincoln, Bristol, Exeter, 1 away at Accy that we were 2 down in.  In contrast, after each of our league cup/FA Cup games, we haven't scored - the games were all away.

 - I agree it does give a platform for players to get some games and show what they can do against reasonable opposition - Toal benefitted definitely, maybe Beck.  Makes no difference to Sadlier though, quite rightly these cup games against inferior opposition aren't a yardstick for league games, just very different games hence we score for fun in the EFL cup and very few in the league.

 -  Not sure I see this build up of confidence for Charles, he never seems to lack that, but he's struggled for form until recently.  He didn't score from open play till the end of Oct so his only 2 EFL Cup goals (in August) made no obvious difference.  He's started to score, but I'm struggling to think he would have scored even less than 4 league goals from open play without the added "confidence" the cup gave him.

JCL's out for this - just bought my ticket. First time at a game in this trophy since 1993 I would think

Hope we can get a good turnout for this.

Got my ticket today

Depends what you call a good turnout.  If we had Pompey in quarter final of FA Cup or League Cup on a January Tuesday, squeezed between 2 other home games the same week (1 against the same team), I'd say about 10k.  So I'm going 6k, and that's not a dig at the EFL Cup, just my guess.  A bit less if we lose to Plymouth, a bit more if we have a good win.

I'm in Tenerife - Enjoy the freezing weather

Are you from the Colin Clan?

I suspect folk will take note if we make the semi final

few more 6k maybe

With regard to what is a good turnout it would be good to fill the ESL and maybe have to open another section.

Micky D . Not from the Colin clan as far as I am aware.

Salford have beat port vale

Tbf, he's not on his own being obsessed about crowds. We've got plenty of attendance nonces on here.

Daz Bob teaming up with his boyfriend now and apparently I'm an attendance nonce.

Very touchy.

Nah, mate, was just an observation that you rarely contribute to any discussion and when you do, it generally involves crowds/attendance.

That's all xxx

How many can we see pompey bringing?

They seem to have plenty of northern exiles that would bump it up to 500+ you’d think

Some major discontent amongst Portsmouth fans atm, reading the official website there doesn’t seem much appetite for this one

Im unashamedly one of them 😂

I tell you what if us and Salford get through to the quarters and we draw them away in the semi, that would suddenly spark some interest that hasn’t been there so far.

Sell out of away tickets on the cards - lovin it 🤣
