went on a course run by the police about this, healthy body breaks down and gets rid of alcohol at approx 1 unit per hour from 20 mins after you start drinking,as you continue drinking more units go in but the rate of breakdown slows slightly but is still around 1 per hour. (this is why if you gulp 10 pints in an hour youll be a lot more pissed than someone who had ten pints over the course of an afternoon say)" average" pint measurement is 2 units and the "safe" amount to have in you system is roughly equivalent to 1/1/2 pints so say 3 units. ( all basic to explain not scientific) if you had a drink at 8pm and had 6 pints, 12 units, so thats 12 hours from 20 past 8 before you would have none, or as near as damn it (you cant actually have no alcohol in your system). I and others on the course were thinking, actually, thats not too bad, with you being allowed a bit and it breaking down while your still drinking etc, but, we were told, the two unit a pint thing is crap, based on old type beers, most are more like 3 -3.5, that there's no such thing as a "perfectly healthy body" and some can take up to an hour just to start breaking down alcohol ( it was explained as the reason you see some people get pissed quick but then dont get any worse during the night) and it can take up to an hour and half rather than an hour,plus all the usual if you smoke/eat chips dont exercise stuff,then its worse still, your soon running into the middle of the next morning before your safe to drive after a few pints. the advice given, was not to drink the night before your driving early, or if you had to, to count a unit per hour from 20 mins after you have finished drinking and you should be ok.

aye, but the offence isn't being drunk and driving, its driving with a certain level of alcohol, if its still in your system, your still committing the offence, if its still in your system, your still affected by it whether you think you are or not.
