I was there from 1976 till it went comprehensive in 1982 (then Smithills VIth Form). Remember two sister teachers that we all knew as fatty and thinny ince. There was some psycho maths teacher (Mr Payne) who used to make us wrestle him at the end of year Mr German (who I think was an extra in Kez - unless my memory is playing tricks) Mr Altham who punched one of my mates for running off the kerb on a cross country run up stitch me lane Mr Moizer who almost blew up the chemistry lab with a piece of sodium and then he paid for the whole of our form to be custard pied by the upper VIth during charity week Bob Dearden "remember lads we only play sport for fun but it aint no fun losing - get out there and win!!" Great times (I think)

My lad is a keeper and played in the same academy squads as Turner and young Jussi.about three seasons ago when he was at Bolton on a 6 week trial. Turner is quality and even then he was an absolute unit but he is very young. Keepers don't fully develop till well into their 20's so anything could happen with him. I wouldn't rush him into first team football and blow his confidence.

It might just be me but when I look at those fixtures they all look like difficult games. Start of the season looks really tough

He went to St Aelreds school in Newton Le Willows which has since become Hope Academy. If he could get the school out of special measures then that would be great as it would help both of my sons education and add a few thousand onto the value of my house.

77 - 83 for me - left half way through my 6th form to go to Smithills so never got to use the common room - gutted. Got some great memories. I remember getting off a detention because I was playing cricket at the weekend against the deputy head Mr Hutchinson when he playe for social circle. Paddy was ace - old school. Bob dearden was our PE teacher and was briliant. Loads of proper Psycho teachers though like Moizer, Altham, Townsend, Paine, that massive maths teacher with the beard, Mr German (who was an extra in Kes) and thinny and fatty inces. Not to mention the 'Bogus Doctor' Moizer was our form teacher in the 5th year and during 'charity week' got the 6th formers to attack the whole class in registration with flour and eggs. Absolute carnage - proper kicked off. Wish I could go back - schooldays are the best times of your life!!

I know that football isnt the real world and a million pounds isnt what it used to be but just think about it - £1m plus god knows what in wages. And that is why we are where we are now in a nutshell.

A midfield of Spearing, Medo, Danns, Feeney and Lee (and davies and hall to come on to give us a bit of a physical presence) - Jesus we only need sneezy and dopey to complete the set. Is there one of them over 5 foot 10??. If those players played like inesta and xavi then they could get away with being small but I dont think any of them can either pass the ball or run with the ball (davies apart). Spearing and Medo do not have a clue what to do with the ball when they get it. Both of them just look for the short pass all the time. Neither of them will carry the ball to commit the opposition and therefore we just dont move players out of position. That, as well as the poor passing, is why we are creating nothing going forward. I dont particularly think becford is a great striker but we could have had Drogba playing up front for us today and he wouldnt have got a kick. I am not usually so bothered about the size of a footballer but you need a balance. That midfield will get bullied this season by championship players. I predict a lot of nil nils and one nil defeats this year. Hope I'm wrong but Im also glad that I havent committed to a season ticket.

They all have 4 years to develop - when they will all be in their mid twenties with about six or seven premier league seasons under their belts. Wisdom is only 21 and has captained England at pretty much all age groups other than the senior team. Flanagan played in the Liverpool first team when he was 18. Jones was signed by whiskey nose for £16.5m because of his potential. For me, Clyne has been the second best right back in the premier league this season. I'll give you that Gibbs and Smalling have a lot to do.

When I was about 7 at primary school I sat on a table with a girl called susan partington. One day we was given some old wooden rulers that had the initials of the previous owners scribbled on. Being 7 we decided that we would keep the initials and add them to our names so that for instance if I got TG on my ruler and my name was Joe Woods then I wood be called Toe Goods. Anyway Susan got PF on her ruler which made her name Pusan Fartington. I remember that being so funny to a 7 year old.that I nearly broke my spleen laughing.

Went to school with a lad called Phil Nurse. (P Nurse). Worked with a man called Graham Kilner and his wife was called Val. I think its almost as good when the names are one letter out.

As a youngster my saturday job was that I used to work on the groundstaff at Burnden (best job I ever had to this day!!). Part of my job was running the sunken baths for full time. Anyway one day Cloughie turned up with the reserves (including a young chris fairclough). I was late running the bath and when the team came in at full time I was still in the bath room. Cloughie gave me a right ear bashing including lots of use of the phrase 'young man'. I got out sharpish.

Bang on that - It all makes sense because there is very littly down time in the pitches being used so they become economically viable. Also a lot of the newer schools theses days are academy's built by funding from 'sponsors' from industry etc. It would be good (but unlikely) if the some of the schools sponsors could be the local football club. I heard yesterday that Cardiff will recieve more money for finishing bottom this year than Man U recived for winning the title last year. Would be nice if some of that found its way to the local community. My youngest lads team trains twice a week on an astro behind an academy school and the improvement has been unbelievable. They pass the ball around at times like an academy team and a lot of it is down to training on the 3G (and some ability). We finished second in the Warrington premier league this year and were the best passing team in the league by a mile.

The finance for the new 3G pitches comes from selling the old council pitches to housebuilders and the rental fees paid by all the clubs to use the new facilities. The new pitches can be built on cheap land like Everton did at Halewood and Bolton did at Lostock. It just needs a bit of joined up thinking and a bit of relaxation in planning. Unfortunately something which we are not good at in this country.

I have two sons who play junior football at a good standard and Ive spent a lot of time at both Everton and Bolton academies over the past couple of seasons. When you get to that level the coaching is excellent and often by ex senior pros. The pitches are unbelievable in quality. The problem is at grass roots level where kids are playing on terrible pitches that are not conducive to good technique. My eldest lad went one week from playing on academy pitches to being back with his club team where he nearly lost a boot in the mud playing on the local park field. If I was in charge of Junior football I would play small sided shorter matches on 3G pitches up to at least age 12/13 to allow them to get plenty of touches and to get the basic techniques right before moving on to 'proper' football. In order to do this I would build floodlit multiple pitches in central areas and have kids come to the one venue rather than each team having its own pitch. In this way you could play matches at various times from early in the morning until late at night depending on age groups. I have seen too many games over the years where the side that wins the game has the biggest kids who can lump the ball the furthest out of the mud. Nobody learns from that.
