SatanGreavsie
I went to the home game when we lost 2-1 at the start of the 79-80 relegation season. It was a portent of things to come that season. But just checked on the return leg was 0-0 the following week and so we went out. But that away would be superfan points. Anyone here go? Underpants
That home leg. Im sure I've seen picture of that game. It's taken from behind the fans on the Embankment. Very thin attendance that night. I always thought that picture was of that Southend game and it may, or may not, show me from behind wearing a snorkel jacket. I went on my own and I remember being on the Embankment.
junot
I remember going to that league cup tie at Southend. I stayed over for a few days in London and we also saw the league game at Brighton a few days earlier.
Duck Egg
We had a couple more 2nd leg league cup ties around that era that would have attracted superfan points. Crystal Palace (81?) after losing the 1st leg at Burnden 0-3 & Watford (82) after losing the home leg 1-2. Our support that night was said to be "around 40". globaldiver
Yes, my only visit to Southend. Had a dental appointment before we travelled, so a bit groggy from the anaesthetic. Me and Dave Halliday, if anyone knows him. On the club bus, I think, but drinking was allowed, I think. We took 3 half bottles of various spirits and beers. Then ended up in the Southend end, as gobby teenagers. Good times. I think this was the trip when our coach hit a disabled car when we arrived back in Bolton. SatanGreavsie
Top effort Junot and GD! In terms of crappy league cup aways, I did go to Wimbledon in 1992 for the 2nd leg after getting stuffed at Burnden in the first. 1,987 was the crowd total but as I was still living in London at the time I don't get superfan points for that (though maybe for going up to the first leg - wasn't that the one where there was a lot of good natured banter with Vinnie Jones?). The Watford game away I was an apprentice at GEC Trafford park, at lunch time I was talking to one of the apprentices, a punk from Eccles who had no interest in football but had an old hillman car, managed to talk him into going to the game, all I had to do was talk to the foreman to see if he’d let us off early, which somehow I did, we was in the allotment end behind the goals, there was little chance of us turning the game around as Watford were star studded team, I counted 13 hardy souls in that terrace including me & the Eccles punk. McGovern scored to take game into extra time, of course we lost in ET and that delayed our departure meaning we arrived back home 3am, just 3 hours Kip before up to catch the bus to Trafford park. As you can tell I was ultra keen back in the day. 🤣 Edited February 21, 2023 by Mounts Kipper

Site Supporter RONNIE PHILLIPS Posted February 21, 2023 Site Supporter Share Posted February 21, 2023 I was visiting friends in Catford with my parents..... persuaded my dad to drive us down there, mum & dad went for a meal in Southend while I was at the game, then picked me up & drove back to London. Woznotwas
We managed a car full from Kearsley as we were a top flight club and would easily turn the tie round...... What a slog. No M25 or M11 so M62 to A1 then cross country down Essex. Not much pub time and a lousy match. 'Highlights?' - one lad got a sting or bite up his trouser leg and we got a puncture on way back. Live and learn? No - about as much fun at Wycombe last Saturday.

I remember Derrick Parker playing for Bury when I went to some of their games around 82-83 (I went to watch everyone locally when not at a BW game in those days). The days of only one sub, when the trainer went to hold up the number to be subbed (no 4th officials then), the Bury fans used to chant "Number 9, Number 9, Number 9" repeatedly and cheered if 9 was held up. He was a donkey but it was cruel.

He played for Southend too (75-77) so I assumed it was the same Parker. According to Wiki, both played for Hyde Utd and Northwich too. Derek Spence (another ex Southend) signed when Wayne Entwistle did, both were returning to the club amid relative fanfare. Entwistle was one of the worst players technically I've seen playing pro football, which he confirmed when he played for us briefly a couple of years later (had a wierd habit of scoring though). This is the same Dave Cusack who played for Doncaster as player manager in Phil Neal's first match in charge. Neal mentioned it in that book he had out. Neal approached Cusack to shake hands before the game - given they were both player managers, quite an unusual thing to happen. Cusack just spat at him. Neal had the last laugh though because we won two-nowt.
