Bolton V Aston Villa U21 (H)

Coming thick and fast.

Not sure whether I’m turning out for this yet.

More intrigued about the side we can get out which rests players who are playing Saturday. Although with an international week following will Evatt not be as concerned?

                      Southwell

          #AP  Santos/Toal  Inwood

Matheson    Matete  Arfield    Williams

                           Lolos

                 Mcatee     Collins

That would rest a fair few. Presumably Vic/Charles start Saturday so top 2 can rotate. Matate and Arfield with Lolos in front could function as a midfield 3. Can Matheson play like he was part of League Cup squad? Williams natural swap for Schon. I’m hoping we can get a couple of young academy lads (*AP) either side of Toal/Santos who could share a half.

  • I honestly struggle to think of a worse individual performance from a Bolton player. His miss should have been the lowest point of his night, but his crossing from open play and corners was abysm

  • And we nearly spazzed that game up too. Plus let's not forget Burton away. He was more stubborn than Evatt could have ever dreamed of being.  Let's not re-write history.

Life just changes things. I’ve been going since 1963 with my old man and brother, always had a season ticket and never missed a home game wherever I was living, Scotland, London, Liverpool, Lincoln an

I haven’t seen anything of tonight’s game (thankfully) but in reference to a few comments on Collins.

I’d have him down as our best player when he’s on form but he looks seriously pub league when he’s not on form, and he’s not on form at the moment. I thought the goal at Arsenal, which was very well taken, would start his season but he’s shite against Shrewsbury too.

Annoying because you now know what he can deliver, I just find it amazing how there’s hardly any in between, he’s either the best or worst player on the pitch.

Surely needs a run of a games and not this stop start policy we have.

Good point… sadly with 2 up top and him not being one of the 2 he’s getting close to being same dilemma as Dapo.

Let’s hope not.

Dapo was being asked to play a position which didn't suit him, Collins starts or comes on in his preferred role, and strolls around looking disinterested at times.

He is a quality player, when he wants to be, but if he wants to be the first name on the team sheet he needs to take the opportunities like last night to really demonstrate that.

That, sir, is an excellent point.

And one way or the other, let's hope we've something equally magical to come.

Can happen but we'll similarly need a manager change

Not sure anyone came out with any credit but he was stand out shite tonight. I normally think he is but tonight was at best 1 out of 10.

Not just picking on yours but so many of the comments are aimed at Williams and Matheson.

My view is they're not capable of the role they're being asked to do. They're not wingers to be putting great balls in, and then when they do go forward they're out of position defensively. The ground they must have to cover will definitely affect their game.

The team needs wingers/wide players in front of full backs. So many of our attacks are coming to nothing because of poor delivery.

Evatt's been indulged by Sharon to such an extent we've more forwards / no10s on our books than Chelsea. Easy to dress up as 'look at all the firepower we've got' but the two on - two off arrangement is a fudge to try and keep them all involved.

I don't see Collins / McAtee becoming the regular first choice start pairing any time soon and while their attitude looks largely decent at minute they'll get fed up with it. Collins really struggled to get to the full-on pace of the game on Sat when he came on.

I suppose when you see talented young players who have been schooled in the correct manner, it makes you realise where we are in the pecking order. We should have won , their goalkeeper was amazing but in general the limitations of most of our players were exposed last night.

It was only 2018 that Bolton beat Aston Villa in the 2nd Division  with the sort of gritty, northern perfromance that the club used to get from Parky but will never get from Evatt

Looked ok from the few touches he had. Composed, not out of place.

Replaced Williams at LWB, which surprised me ... thought he was a CB.

He could have been a ball boy and still done better than Williams. 😁

Where's Osei-Tutu disappeared to?

Hutchinson was tested once in 90 minutes and his positioning was shite leading to their goal, then got nowhere near any of their penalties. He might be absolutely brilliant but there was nothing tonight to suggest that.

Matheson was in acres of space on the right and did nothing at all with it, out done for shite crossing by Williams, DC may have his limitations but is way ahead of him and I can see why he hasn't been given that final squad spot. Hopefully he develops,  and he should be playing in these games, but after tonight's showing he is still way off.

Yes I agree Cambridge. I was really disappointed with Matheson last night, his one outstanding feature is pace and yet time after time with space in front of him he chose to turn back. His final ball is far better that JDC but on last nights evidence he’s way off a squad place.

I'm not sure I've ever watched Matheson and though pace was a strength

I don't think he's slow either, but I wouldn't describe him as pacy

Yes, arguably up there with beating Aston Villa in 1994 under Rioch given the difference in budgets

He looked it to me but after last night I doubt we’ll get chance to find out.

Ah, cheers.
Must have missed that.

For a system so reliant on and forwards so dependent on service from, we ain’t half poor In the wing back areas.

intent to get in behind, willingness to put the ball in and overall delivery are all nowhere near up to the standard needed to make all the patience and ball moving pay dividends

Yeah not like the stuff we're treated to by Mr Evatt. As someone else said recently a managers reputation for a large part comes down to propaganda. They are labelled this or that. Must admit I don't find watching Wrexham games boring and in fact quite enjoyable from what I get to see..

i'll quote you, but not just at you

if the crossing and some of the finishing was owt close to par, we score 6, minimum and its labelled a good performance

sadly, the crossing was shit

i say crossing, its just passes across goal, nowt that technical
