Many vets practices bought up in exactly the same way as has happened to the dentists in the UK.

Back to 1970s 80s , nearly all dentists and vets were independent and sole trader with junior partners.

The owner of the practice would be middle aged , male and the sole bread winner for his middle class family.

He needed to carry out work to provide an income for his family (i refer to dentists here)

Forward 30 years , 95% of dentists being trained in the UK are female , soon to want to start a family and also not the main bread winner in that family, so trained up ,but year after year after year being lost to the profession they trained in.

Along comes the financial crash this century and banks plus investments go tits up, but someone in Europe looks at our tired out medical blueprint for our teeth and animals and see they can gain a far more reliable income buying up these tiny independent practices , way more than money markets.

Some of the big pet ones are German owned , they refer to individual vets as CGU units

Cash generator units

As for your teeth they all take a salary to look after your teeth but refuse unless you pay private.

The contract was brought in by Blair and Brown as a result of the contract they gave to our GPs

Well that’s bollocks for starters

A lot of truth in here

Vets and Dental practices are being brought up by overseas large corporate organisations principally using Private Equity or Hedge Funds. One of the largest in the UK, Medivet are German owned, i have experience of them and they are very much geared to maximising the profits particularly regarding the add-ons and medications. There was (and maybe still is) a government enquiry into the vetinary industry and its prices.

It appears to me that the principle is to buy out all the small independent practices, steadily increase the rates by "bigging up" the services and "professionalism" and eventually Joe Public will accept the higher prices as the market rate which provides the funding stakeholders a 50% gross profit. Corner the market, eliminate competition and make a killing

Let’s hear it

My missus is keen to know your thoughts…

Is your missus a vet?

I have used the same vet practice for almost 40 years and seen the junior partners become owners maintaining the ethos of the place, nothing fancy but good honest care for all of my dogs.

The last partner, Peter retired two years ago and sold to the German owned Medivet chain. Peter's junior lasted about 12 months and has now gone independent taking the receptionist who remembers all but one of my dogs. I have continued going there out of misplaced loyalty. I never see the same vet twice, they are all locums charged at £49 for 10 minutes.

My current old boy has arthritis and requires a monthly jab which has steadily increased from £85 to £100 (80% claimable on insurance).

What really gets me uptight is how they profiteer on ordinary drugs... he also has gastritis and takes anti acid tablets. Initially they were charging me £25/box then it shot up to £45... I did some research and found the same pills at an on-line pharmacy (they are human drugs) for £16/box. Got a refund from them and then they were charging £21.50 for the following months (okay you need to make a profit somewhere i thought)... last time it was back to 2 boxes @ £90! Also they keep wanting to sell me UMove supplements at £70/box.

They keep saying to me, its all covered in your insurance policy... but the claims affect your premium... £900 last time, I spend less on car insurance! I also suspect a tie up with kick-backs with the insurers (price ringing) but haven't had the energy or urge to start digging for dirt.

So are vets failed dentists?

It's difficult to keep up with who folk are upset with today.

It does seem high.

Would be a great course to go on for a bloke though... :)

It seems high because it’s nonsense.

What is the actual number then?

If it was 85, or 75 it would still be very high.

Like I said, without doing the maths in full, it has to be a surprising swing to account for the overall change.

Different unis have different ratios. Ranges from 70/30 to 55/45

Hard to work out current proportions, but these figures do show a very large swing in the ratio, which must mean many more women train as men.

Interesting web page that.

From that site, quoting a former head of the BDA talking about NHS employment for dentists:

So, it’s a good place to get a foothold and learn the trade, but when it comes to making money, that place is outside of the NHS.

So, the NHS has a massive list of problems that need to be solved a long time before we reach any talk of dental services.

Why is it always down to "making money" these days? A previous posting mentioned how a late dentist was a pillar of the community and hundreds came to his funeral. I know where my heart lies

The best dentist I have ever encountered was about 15 years ago... a lovely Asian lass with a Yorkshire accent. We got on really well and she told me her father was a consultant breast surgeon and advised her not to go into general surgery but to go into dentistry so she could stay flexible and eventually start her family.

Yep... after 5 years of our peculiar love affair, she got up the duff and quit

Medivet are owned by CVC who are one of those nebulous investment outfits based in the Channel Islands.

As for profiteering, well that depends if you’re a capitalist or a communist.

If someone works hard and studies to become a veterinary professional, at massive cost both financially and in terms of life quality, then they free to charge whatever they like. Nobody is forcing you to pay it. If you cannot afford to keep a pet then perhaps it’s not for you.

Of course they make massive margin on drugs, and of course the drug companies encourage it.

It’s a private market and as such is driven by what the market will pay.

Did anyone else have Mr Hamilton as their dentist in the 80s?

Was on CNR near the infirmary

I doubt whether this will have any teeth but the lack of competition in the market place will ultimately have a detrimental effect on pet ownership... Will I be able to afford a dog when on a fixed retirement income?

I respect vets but I can see their hands are tied when working in these corporate "CGU" practices

They had just kitted out all new surgeries at Birmingham Uni , big expense , pre term and Brendan says to me the lucky lad that got accepted on the course will be having one hell of a year

i imagine 95% would be inaccurate for that years intake.

Mind you every dental practice i have been in in the last twenty is buzzing with blokes , from the receptionists, the nurses (never met a male one in 40 years}to our hygenists and if you carry out the correct CPD and stay registered more intusive work allowed , everyone of them big strapping lads

When my dentist decided to retire and sell his practice, the new lot took over and completely changed things.

One male dentist as far as I'm aware.

Saw him once and now see a woman.

All women assistants too.

No issue with that.

Do have an issue with the (lack of) quality of service. Thirty quid for 3 minutes of half hearted effort. None of the previous tasks undertaken during a checkup by the precious regime.

Chalk and cheese. This is an NHS practice too. Complete crap in comparison.

Looking to go private now- might be more expensive, but they'll actually do something.

So you’re basing your gender split figure on a chat you had with a bloke 17 years ago rather than readily available stats?

The gender split at Birmingham is 65/35.

You're welcome.

Think i went to that one in the 70s, was the music in the waiting room always " best of the carpenters?"
