It's a problem everywhere, and no doubt much worse in some other places, we're probably quite fortunate that we don't get that many (relatively speaking), because we're an island  - although some would have you believe that we get the lions share.

Being an island also reduces the amount of land available for food, housing and associated services.

We're already significantly less forested than some other nations already.

Not that the specific numbers count really matters- the cultural effects are the same everywhere.
