I always equate the Big Sam days to Bradshawgate being at its absolute best as well. Mint days.

even if the current or even future lot served up a tiny portion of that sides success, the enjoyment it brought, the unity we felt because of it I would die a happy man

what a period, what a football club

Just watched it and it was a brilliant reminder of what a great football club we're lucky enough to support.

just finished and wanted to thank you for posting, great memories from some of the best years of my life

It's hard to imagine us having better days, amazing video, look at some of the players mentioned who we never actually got, what a dramatic incredible era, great players, staff and just magic, Okocha will be forever my all time fave player.

that League Cup final hurt a lot, cheated and the ref was a joke throughout and unexpected,  was convinced we'd win, that's always a what if game for me, much like Holdsworth miss and how we'd have faired in the final and if it wasn't for that ref v Ipswich and we went up, a year earlier, we wouldn't have had that 'era' it would have been different, but how.

seems like yesterday then you realise he was appointed last century

Taggart being on it has put me off.

I was 12 when we were promoted to the Premier League under Big Sam.

It's mental looking back at those years, what was achieved, how good we actually were. I show my lads clips on Youtube and they genuinely cannot believe we went toe-to-toe (and often beat) the best teams in England and even Europe.

18 years ago tomorrow we knocked an Atletico Madrid team containing the likes of Sergio Aguero & Diego Forlan out of the UEFA Cup. What I'd give to experience that just once more, and for the yoof to get a go too.

Heady days them 😀

Definitely a case of seeing things through nostalgic rose-tinted glasses, but it felt like the town was kind of on the crest of a wave early-mid 00s. Great nightlife, Boltonians all over telly and radio, the team doing so well.

I'll watch this doc today, will probably be a mess by the end of it!

Really enjoyed the documentary and it's obvious that those players hold BSA in very high regard. Him leaving when he did tainted my view of him and things like his OTT celebration at the Reebok when Blackburn scored further sullied the memories. This documentary has gone a long way to fixing that, the way Sam talks about the club and those players has endeared him to me again. Gartside (RIP) can't speak to it but if he did say that he didn't want BWFC to qualify for the Champions League then an ambitious manager naturally would see they've hit their ceiling and look for a club that could match their ambitions, Allardyce never managed that but I find it hard to blame him for trying.

God, we were lucky to experience all that. Bloody wonderful.

IIRC Sam had said previously that we were 4th going in to the Jan window and the club had budget a £15m budget for the following summer. He wasn’t asking for extra money but that budget to be brought forward to enable him to sign the players needed to keep us in the CL spots

that’s where the message relayed back was “we don’t want CL football”

as you say PG sadly can’t respond to those claims but it has been position that Sam has relayed on a few occasions over the years

I’m ace me.

Repeat for a couple of hours

And I'm sure that if the board agreed and we then subsequently failed to qualify, he's have quietly and happily accepted he'd already spent his budget and wouldn't have asked for more money that summer

As you say, PG isn't here to defend himself, but he certainly went to bat for Sam many many times asking the board for funds.

I'm still not convinced that PG said "we don't want to play in the Champions League".
I've a sneaking suspicion that the club just said they couldn't afford to gamble any more money on trying to get there.

Inevitable that PG was the messenger getting shot

These are also my thoughts, I guess we'll never know

How long is the documentary

It was great reliving those times but is it only me who sat there wanting to pull that fucking grey hair out of his nostril? 😀

Watched it last night, its fantastic, only thing is I wish they had included the highlights he was watching (not sure if thats maybe a regional version issue - every time it showed him watching an important moment or goal, it just showed still images, and only post match interviews etc. were shown in full).
