Zozzy
Never changed since 1970 to my knowledge. That stretch reet from the Trotters / Clarence all the way up Bradshawgate to Prestons corner; down Bank St ter't Cromwellian; along Deansgate to that shite underground Greenall Whitleys place under Marks and Sparks (name escapes me now) and down Churchgate to that pub opposite the Parsh Church (another one whose name escapes me now). The Clarence has been knocked down and is now part of the car park that belongs to the carpet shop. Across the road there is a bookies where Trotters used to be. I have never heard of the Cromwellian it must be even before my time. If it was on the same side as the Dog & Partridge half way down it could be the Pole Dancing Club, if it was the pub on the opposite side of the road that had that fatal fire (late 60s I think) that is now a pay and display car park. The Deansgate underground pub was the 'Lower Nags Head' which doesn't exist anymore and is probably just a cellar for the shop. The pub opposite the Parish Church was called the 'Boars Head' which is now offices. Apart from that bolty everything is just the same
H
Remember going to the Cromwellian Christmas 65. Only 15 don't know how I got in, certainly didn't look 18. The band were St Louis Union who had just released a single called Girl. It was their one and only hit and reached number 11 in January. Sure it wasn't called the Cromwellian at the time but can't think of it's previous name.

Guest as
Pubs start next door to the old cinema now & they go right the way down Bradshawgate - good place if you're looking for a drunken brawl, Bolty. Nelson Square is now pretty posh, with a nightclub, restaurant & a few 'nicer' boozers on there - but it gets let down by the cheap-as-chips Wetherspoons. Churchgate has a few, the one you mentioned is the Brass Cat. And those home-made ciders in the Man & Sythe are stil lethal Banks Street is full of scally bars, with an indie bar & a lap-dancing club too. Next door to Prestons is BL1, and above it is a nightclub called Reflex. Facing the Big M&S was the Crown & Cushion, it was nicknamed the Crown & Flicknife when I was a teenager, that has now gone & there's no pubs anywhere near there now. If I could download piccies off mi cameraphone, I'd help you out.

Was doin me head in that was! Soul crowd used to meet at the Boars so I should remember that. Lower Nags was an under age drinking establishment - famous for it. Young uns wert only ones they could sell that disgusting ale to! Had me wedding reception upstairs at the Trotters as I wanted a Wanderers theme I suppose there's loads on here who have had to battle their way around that area. Used to be fooking murder around the Prince Bill, Gaiety (Golden Fleece - wonder what it's called now), Yates' etc. If you wanted it, you would always find it and regularly find it when you didn't want it! Some rum fookers in Bowton them days and I'm sure it ain't changed. Can't believe tha doesn't know the Cromwellian / Beachcomber. Wish I could remember what it was called after that. Keep thinking Bees Knees but that was on Crompton Way - the old Bolton Casino I think. Cue Mods moving this to Banter. Suppose it made sense to change it to what everyone always called it. Making an old Bolton lad quite sentimental all this tha knows, sob.................................. Burndens Bogs
Used to be fooking murder around the Prince Bill, Gaiety (Golden Fleece - wonder what it's called now), Yates' etc. Prince Bill (Guaranteed a smack in the mouth,if you fancied it) Is now called Cromptons Mule The Gaiety Has had a few name changes but is currently The Flying Fute Yates is still as it were, in fact i think there are only 2 boozers on Bradshawgate that are still there(with original names) since Bolty bolted - Yates and The Balmoral. Burndens Bogs
Beachcomber before the Cromwellian, right? Ain't that the one where the fire was? As someone already said, the fire was in the Top Storey club, almost directly opposite Beachcomber/Cromwellian/Playmate/Maxwells Plum. The fire was a bit before my time, but i think a few died jumping from the Top floor of the club down to the (very shallow) River Croal.

Deadly fire in club kills 19 in May 1961 One of the greatest tragedies to hit Bolton in recent years was the devastating fire at the Top Storey night club in Crown Street, Bolton on May 1, 1961 which killed 19 people. Four people survived after jumping 80 feet into the River Croal and four others were killed when they attempted to save themselves. An inquest returned open verdicts on the dead amid rumours, never proved, that the fire was started deliberately. http://www.thisisbolton.co.uk/search/displ...in_may_1961.php
