B.E.N. Think its spot on.

Creativity has become a dirty word

2:40pm Monday 15th September 2008

By Staff Sports Reporter ?

MY first trip to Craven Cottage was in August 2004.

As usual away at Fulham, we lost, but there was a ray of hope. One of the greats of modern European football made his Wanderers debut.

Even though he only played a season with us, Fernando Hierro is probably my favourite ever Wanderers player.

He brought experience, prestige and a passing ability as good as anyone in world football.

He was, of course, the latest in an impressive line of foreign stars brought to the club by Sam Allardyce.

And the one thing the likes of Hierro, Campo, Okocha and Djorkaeff had in common was class. They were comfortable with a football at their feet.

As I watched Saturday?s meek surrender I pined for just one of those players to inject some joy into the experience. When did creativity become such a dirty word at Bolton?

On Saturday it was clear as soon as we saw the teamsheet that the manager didn?t want to see any creativity from his team.

Instead, he relied on graft, grit and ?putting in a good shift? (whatever that actually means).

A team that involves Joey O?Brien, Nolan, Muamba and McCann will not create and score goals.

Was it 4-4-2? Was it 4-5-1? In either case, players were out of position.

The fact that the fans were shouting for Riga from about 20 minutes into the game shows what the vast majority thought of the stale and rigid starting 11.

Why a creative midfielder wasn?t signed during the window is beyond me, and Megson must realise that Saturday?s starting team will get us relegated.

Not even Elmander will save us if he has no service.

This team is desperate for a spark, and if the likes of Riga and Smolarek are to provide it, they need to start and we must sacrifice two of the defensive midfielders.

The fact is that Megson doesn?t think there?s an issue ? this was proved at half-time on Saturday when he chased down the referee and angrily confronted him.

Incidentally, the ref should have given two penalties against us and allowed the goal to stand when a foul was wrongly given in favour of Jaaskelainen.

Instead of looking at himself and his woeful selection, he blamed the referee.

The only players to get any credit are Jaaskelainen, Samuel, Davies and Gardner ? and four players performing isn?t good enough.

You couldn?t imagine Hierro putting up with it.

Hierro had about 5 decent games for us

apart from that, I like this honest assessment of events from the BEN

Staff Writer probably forgets that Hierro was fcuking terrible until he got transfer listed.

Back to the point, Capello knows more about football than us, he was bollocking Rooney for dropping too deep and leaving Heskey isolated. Megson selects a team where the big man up front is isolated from the start, not even Sammy Lee would have selected that team.

That 'good shift' crap gets right on my nerves, what a dull, tedious, old hat approach to take. It doesn't even encompass concepts like battle or scrap never mind flair, enthusiasm or excitement.

It just suggests they are doing a mundane job, and gives thanks for actually putting in an average amount of effort.

I have to say, you can pick the bones out of any article, but the gist of it I agree with entirely.

Bad selection, bad tactics, not even having a go. The negativity is stifling.

spot on there we dont even have a go at teams ,people can make excuses about injuries and suspensions but the managers job is to get the best out of the 11 on the pitch.we should be forcing the play even if we had 11 sixteen year olds on the field.

Look

Megson can't win, we all know this.

Everyone, myself included, wanted this big, expensive summer signing. And we got one - the jury is obviously out yet so no comment.

Megson then thought, "Let's not concede many" and I think that's ok. We're NEVER going to shovel 6/7 goals past someone, so we need to be hard to beat. 3 major injuries have made the situation pretty awful so he's stuck to what he knows ie. Let's not concede. Alas, the players have let him down there.

I'd love to see a midfielder or 2 fizzing past Gerrard and Ballack and distributing 40 yard passes but we won't get that for now. I will admit that we don't need 5 midfielders tripping over each other but just maybe Megson has that worked out now and will change it slightly.

The trouble there is, we have 3 games coming up where he won't alter the set up (and if we had a few more points on the board nobody would mind) and that will get more people calling for his head.

He's not brilliant, but give him a few more games eh?

P?dant, moi?

PS only 2 ls in Ballack! :p

You've been in the hills too long, sir.

Anyway, everyone keeps saying Megson is a championship manager - but a good one. Well, there are about 6/7 championship standard teams in the Prem, all we have to do is be the best of that bunch and we'll be fine.

(Traf - your opinion please; Ryder cup - mortgage on the yanks?)

I think Jonathan was the expert on championship manager! What happened to him?

As for the Ryder Cup: The Americans are a much stronger team without Tiger Woods who isn't a team player and really should win on their own course. However, there are too many places it can go wrong to risk a large amount of money on a 5/4 shot.

The bookies expect it to be tight: look at the odds.

Europe: 8/11 best price

USA: 5/4 best price.

But with a 1.5pt handicap, the odds are exactly the opposite way round.

This points to a Europe victory by 1pt at most, maybe even a tie, whereby Europe still win.

You could back the correct score:

USA 13.5-14.5 Europe 10/1

USA by 1pt: also 10/1

The tie: 12/1

I think that's more realistic bet than backing USA at 5/4 and it pays almost 3/1.

But don't just take my word for it.

Not sure why you quoted me, to make your point?

Spurs seem to be our polar opposite - all creativity and no steel.

Would you rather be in our position looking for the creativity or in theirs looking for the steel??

JAL

wouldn't mind some of their creative players

Their position.

Costs less money to rectify their problems than ours.We were like that under Todd in 98/99.It needed a new manager to change it.
