Mark Davies - Signed

Megson moves in with surprise ?650,000 bid for Wolves midfielder Davies

Gary Megson has lined up a shock ?650,000 raid on Wolves for midfielder Mark Davies. Bolton manager Megson is ready to poach Davies from Molineux after tabling a firm bid for the 20-year-old on Thursday night.

Davies is currently on loan at League One leaders Leicester City, who made a ?300,000 bid earlier this week, but now he is bound for the Barclays Premier League.

Wonder if/when anyone will notice we've started playing football? We've been passing it round nicely for a while now but we're still a long ball/set pieces team according to anyone who says owt.

Some good words from the match reporter on MOTD tonight.

Hopefully though, opposition managers will still set their stalls out for nothing but long punts from us.

I was pleased with the manner we approached the game today.

The Bald Eagle had a good game, took his goal well and seems very comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Mark Davies had an excellent full debut too, and Kevin Davies was just Kevin Davies at his best.

FAO those not sure about Puygrenier: he's still new to the English game, but so far so good.

Exactly what he said :good:

& if we'd drawn? early days before you all start the major love-in.

Here's hopin we have turned the corner

There's no major love-in going out.

Referring back to my comment:

Were you not pleased with the manner we approached the game?

Did we not try to play out from the back?

Didn't Puygrenier play well?

Did he not take his goal well?

Did he not look comfortable with the ball?

Wasn't Mark Davies's debut a good one?

Didn't Kevin Davies have one of his better games?

Agreeing with those comments doesn't mean it's a love-in.

We're miles away from being the finished article: 2 successive 2 goal leads thrown away proves this. Our league position proves this. Our home form proves this.

Rome wasn't built in a day: mighty oaks come from small acorns and any other clich?s you want to use etc etc, but it's nice to be able to be positive for a change: you should try it.

The Bald One reminded me yesterday of Alan Stubbs in his prime. Not afraid to play out of defence so it doesn't come straight back. Conversely, not afraid to give it a lump out either when necessary.

I do wish he'd (GM) keep someone up front when we're defending corners. My vote would be Kev's little brother. He has the guile and the speed to worry defences enough to have a couple of players back with him.

with regards to the man up at corners, this is totally a matter of opinion, which fine.

but it does get very tedious when the SAME people, shout at megson for not doing so at EVERY SINGLE corner.

imo we are DEFENDING the corner, so the more bodies defending the better.

when clearing the ball, its very rare you'd hit the man up front anyway.

The points Traf made were the very points we were making to some of the morons near us who were moaning about our terrible negative tactics when Spurs equalised. It was a generally good, positive performance yesterday, and would have been if we'd have drawn.

Just my opinion, but if we leave a man on the half way line, they have to have two men back to cover, giving us a numerical advantage when defending the box. Otherwise, it's 10 on 10, which when we're under sustained pressure for 5-10 minutes means its hard to get out of our half. Having said that, 3-2 up in injury time I would be happy to see everybody back. Just depends on the situation.

yesterday, we brought everybody back - as did spurs, more than once

even when we did that, they still had three men on the halfway line

which I spotted and said - "why don't we leave someone up front?".

does seem crazy that we don't.

Perhaps it's a percentage game.

They have 3 back plus the keeper. One guy takes the corner means they can have a maximum of 6 players in the box.

If we have 11 in the box defending, in theory we have a 11/17 (64.7%) of winning the first ball.

Well played young man.

How many goals have we conceded from corners this season?

I count two, West Ham and Liverpool away.

If we were shipping goals from corners all over the show, fair enough, but it works, so why boo?

It'd help if the people so quick to boo had a fucking clue what they were on about.

100% agree, Traf.

Major moment for me was when KD went full-length to head the ball out of play deep in Spurs half during the last few minutes - just to slow down the next Spurs attack. Two yards in front of where we were sat. The guy's immense !

Great debut by Mark Davies - maybe the best since Franny Lee way back. Just keep him moving & passing ...... and away from the pies !

Puygrenier looks class. Hopefully a great partnership with Cahill to come.

Promising signs from Makakula and Smolarek, depending which we play with KD.

Given the low confidence, a good performance all round. Credit to GM.

Two doubts though : Muamba's passing & Samuel's defending. But GM is still building, as Traf said.

Why don't we just have Jaaskelainen back for corners and send the ten outfield players up the pitch. The opposition would have to score direct from the corner otherwise they would be offside.

I don't really advocate this tactic.

They wouldn't be offside if they stayed behind the ball.

You cant be offside from a dead ball kick

You cant be offside from a dead ball kick

Yes you can, if the ball is travelling forwards. Though you can't be off side from a corner because the ball goes backwards.

for me the issue is what happens when the ball is cleared ?

i do think we lack an outlet, even if all he does is slow the ball coming back.

very easy to manage from my seat however.

By Glass knees I assume you mean Bullard?

Let me play devils advocate here. Bullard comes for ?6M, goes straight into the team and helps to keep us up = another season of Sky TV money or Davies comes and isn't ready for The Premiership, our one dimensional midfield can't keep us from relegation but hey, don't worry in The Championship Mark Davies will be a world beater - shame we will be skint and starting the season on -20 points.

Just saying like.

Here we go again

Anyone who is not happy at the moment with our manager or direction obviously thinks we should be beating Utd 8-0, winning the Champions League, signing Messi blah blah blah.

Bollocks. We just escaped relegation last season and I thought we'd learned our lesson. Then it was a goalscorer, now it's a creative midfielder (although you could argue we still haven't solved the goal scorer yet as we don't seem to know what to do up front). So we have probably decided that as there are 3 worse sides than us so we don't need to take a risk on Bullard. We have to secure our short term while still planning long term. What other proven 'creative' premiership midfielders are going to be available in January? So now it is going to be a lot closer in May than it might have been.

So, we are buying a player, who is from a Championship side, but is actually on loan to a side below them...hmmmmm inspirational

Woah, wait a minute, we haven't won in 5 matches, 2 points off bottom and we buy.........a championship division 1 player FFS

Agreed, we shall see what/if we have a midfield player that we all agree is good after the window closes.....Personally, i have seen nothing in Mr Megson to have any faith in him, i just have faith in my club......even when we get shat on by them
he's hardly a Djorkaeff, Hierro or Okocha is he?

My first point is that he may be one for the future but he cant be up to premier level yet if he is loaned out to a little league 1 club like Leicester. However, for 1M could be a good aquisition

The second point though is SSN are linking him with Wigan and to be honest with Megson sunning himself and other more prominent managers such as Steve Bruce it would not surprise me if we do keep missing out on players to the minor clubs.

I see your point, however it is a generalisation. My disappointment is based on the fact that whilst bringing in youngsters for the future is always positive, we also live in the now. We desperately premiership recruits, and even though no-one knows what is happening behind the scenes, with 8 days to go i don't mind admitting that I am concerned by my perceived lack of activity by the club. I just hope that the scilence is based on a lot of work behind the scenes, culminating in a signing that will impress.

Christ almighty, stop using Leeds as a reason not to spend money, you'll be telling us not to cross the road because someone got knocked down once. It happened to one club. And as for all the other clubs who were in the Premiership and aren't now - it's because they played shit football, had a shit manager and were probably too busy "building for the future" and found themselves relegated.

Get a name in Gary, get them on loan if you want, make it short term. But put us back on the map, give us something to talk about in the pub, something to get excited about, something to give us a full house once or twice in a season, someone to remember "Hey, what about when XXX played for the club". Just do it to humour those of us who don't go to every game now because we think the whole football thing is a bit rubbish at the moment.

Sorry if this is a little bit too exciting for some people. Oh yeah, what if we did a Leeds....

dont we need players that can come in and do a job now?

I must admit that I am concerned as to why Wolves loaned him out if he is half decent. If he was injured and as some say it is to get him fit then fair enough. However, remember Rasiak? Another considered not good enough for the Southampton first team in the Championship so we got him on loan.

Here are some of the replies from the Megson haters.

Is this what Megson meant when he said "you have to question their intelligence"

Edited by Garrp

hindsight is a wonderful thing garp

mind you, reading some of the quotes, they're hardly scathing attacks, just sceptical

as I'm sure most of us were till we saw him in action

With regard to corners I think most teams now fill the box wth defenders to limit the amount of room the other team can attack, purely with weight of numbers. As an emptier box actually favours the attacking team.

It does get on my nerves too, but pretty sure thats why.
