After today's result the Portsmouth fans were chanting that they were 'staying up' - and our fans are on here talking about sacking the manager.......

 

 

Just for the record - We are still one place higher* than them in the league!!!

 

We have actually won more games than them, scored more goals than them and have better goal difference than they do!!!

I think some fans are probably disappointed at the stuff served up this season. Lets face it, apart from that very good November, the rest has been relegation form.

 

I agree Megson stabilised the club last season, I just think there are better Managers out there.

I think a team of Bruce Rioch and Gary Speed would excite the fans. Gary has a lot of experience at International level and is doing some coaching. With a wise old head around him I think Gary would be very good for Bolton.

Just an opinion as I was asked to give one. Perhaps we'll just carry on having more performances like today and change nothing.

Well we've been 12th for a large chunk of the season - so quite a few clubs by your definition have been playing relegation type football for most of the season.

 

Megson is not the best manager in the world - I don't think anyone is claiming he is but sacking him is no answer unless you have a better manager lined up to take his place.

 

The question should be whether a club who is ?53.5 million in debt is able to attract someone who is better though?

 

Obviously we would have to sack Megson - who in all probability would have kept us up for two consecutive seasons (which after all was the brief given to him by Eddie Davies) - and thus incur the cost of his removal (two years salary at the very least).

 

The new manager would obviously have to like Megson's squad - because he will not have the money to significantly change it.

 

So whoever replaces the sacked Megson will have to sell to generate transfer funds - the only obvious asset that other clubs might desire would be Cahill. I don't think the new manager would want to lose him.

 

So you have a club in big debt, with at best an average squad and with a very limited transfer budget.

 

The owner has just sacked Megson because he and the fans consider being 12th in the league for a goodly part of the season is simply not acceptable.

 

How many managers do you think would actually think that they would get significantly better results out of Bolton than Megson is doing?

 

OK I know there will be plenty of people wanting the job - a million pounds plus wages is probably the minimum they would get even if they did a Sammy Lee and got sacked after just nine games - but which 'quality' managers do you think we would really attract?

 

For comparison other Premiership clubs who have change managers this season have got Paul Hart,

Ricky Sbragia, Joe Kinnear / Alan Shearer and Sam Allardyce (the one who left us because we had no money remember!).

 

So sack Megson and then what? Take a punt on someone who has never managed at the top before - say Owen Coyle, or someone who has - say Souness, or someone from abroad - say Houlier?

 

As far as I can see - Megson as done all that Davies as asked of him - and I can't see anything changing anytime soon.

 

Edit - I see that before I had chance to post this you went for Speed - a person who as never managed a club before in his life - and Rioch a wonderful manager from a decade ago but who as done nothing of note since leaving Bolton.

I'm not in favour of sacking Megson (yet) and there have been some really stupid suggestions as to who could replace him but the rose tinted brigade are sounding less convincing match by match.

 

What we need is an experienced manager, someone who would not be too much of a risk, a sucess at previous clubs if not actual silverware, eager to prove themselves over again and who would come to a club like Bolton. Now where could we find someone like that? Holland maybe.

Fine words that man, Megson was'nt responsible for not having anyone on the post was he. Yes it was a poor performance again, but the players have to take alot of responsiblity for the performance. For anyone to suggest getting rid of Megson now is just sheer lunacy. He's building, give him another 1 or 2 years, but don't expect him to build a side to challange the top 6, it aint going to happen.
