Shaun Bates Funeral

As I said I would, only being 40 mins away I went down to it in Rugby today to show what support I could.

First point to make is top marks to Tony Kelly and Kevin Davies for going down; they chatted to Shaun's family and everyone in general afterwards. Indeed Shaun's dad Dave has nothing but praise for how the club has responded, Tony Kelly in particular.

Very emotional event, as you might imagine - heightened especially by the presence of so many of his school friends, who obviously found it especially hard to take. A few other Whites had turned up to pay their respects, including the lass who has the Daventry Whites flag which made its way all round Europe, and a few others I didn't get the chance to chat to. Also many of his schoolfriends had donned Bolton tops for the service, which was a nice gesture; plus there were a good few other shirts dotted round, from Derby, Rangers, Pompey, Liverpool, United, Everton, Newcastle etc. So there was very much a sense of the broader football family helping out, which, on chatting to Dave, clearly meant a lot to him.

Most poignant was the club flag drapped over the coffin :(

His dad Dave is going to try to get up to the Hull game - he still has some injuries which don't help the travelling. And of course it means going up the route they used that day - indeed signs asking for wintesses to the accident are still there I believe. But he does worry that if he doesn't get to that then he might not get back again.

Cracking bloke, bearing up with as much dignity and composure as you could possibly imagine in such an unimaginable scenario - had a friendly word and greeting for everyone on the day - as did other family members.

Of course there will many many hard days ahead for them, but at least I think today confirmed to them that they will want for nothing in terms of help and encouragement from the club, fellow Whites and the larger football community.

RIP Shaun

Wonderful post and very fitting for such a very sad occassion.

No jokes or anything but like MG I would have gone to pots seeing the BWFC flag draping the coffin. In fact just thinking about it is brining the small tears to my eyes.

May God look after you, Shaun, and Rest in Peace.

A Wanderers fan forever.

RIP lad

Not easy reading that. Utterly tragic.

Fabulous gesture Satan, once agian RIP and thoughts to family and all involved, sad indeed

what he said

PG, TK and SKD deserve credit for the club's approach to this too.

You did something I doubt I could have done Satan, well done and thanks from us all. RIP Shaun

That puts everything into perspective.

We moan and groan about the management, team etc but there is far more to life !!

What top blokes Tony Kelly and Kevin Davies are. Even if they didn't go off their own backs,

it just goes to show the "family" club image that BWFC are trying to portray.

Keep the faith, support through thick and thin - come on you whites.

Every credit to you for going and to the Club for having a presence. It's such a tragic thing but I'm sure the family will be comforted at least a little by the support from everybody on the site.

RIP

Having a ten year old son myself who comes to all the matches with me it has really hit home, my thoughts and prayers go out to Dave and all family and friends. Thanks for the report Satan, I'm really glad the club have done everything right and represented what this has meant to all Wanderers supporters at losing one of our own at such an age.

Very moving post Satan.

RIP Shaun.
