seeing as the UAF believe the EDL aren't being altogether honest, i take it as opposition to a group of 'paki haters'

Then they are an ignorant organisation. The role of a union had no place in Saturday's events.

from the BEN before the protest

Given the controversial rally by the EDL scheduled for tomorrow, Bolton UNISON believe that it is important to state publicly our position on the matter.

As the leading public sector trade Union in Bolton representing almost 6,000 members, some of whom will be practising Muslims, this provocative act will not address the purported concerns the EDL have in relation to extremism.

The argument of free speech and the right to protest are rightly valid. However, we should never forget the lessons of history and the direction we face when bigotry and intolerance go unchallenged.

The events of the thirties, not just in Germany but very much in Britain, clearly demonstrate the fine dividing line between religious intolerance and racial hatred. The comparisons with attacks on the Jewish religion in the thirties and those directed towards the Muslims today should be of huge concern to every decent citizen.

Bolton Council are to be congratulated for their speedy response in denouncing the EDL and promoting the One Bolton Pledge, so eagerly signed by Bolton?s football team. However, their stance would have gained greater respectability had our civic leaders together with religious leaders stood shoulder to shoulder with the staff and players of Bolton Wanderers on the steps of our Town Hall.

The preferred option, of effectively closing down Bolton town centre, has created a climate of fear and the real potential for civil disturbance.

I am sure after the event, there will be a thorough examination as to what gave the EDL the confidence to have a rally in our town and no doubt there will be a variety of conclusions.

Some of these may simply dismiss supporters of the EDL as football thugs but factors such as poverty, lack of access to social housing, job security and wars overseas are all underlying factors which form part of a bigger picture.

Ignoring the fact BWFC had a top flight football match to play on Saturday.......

They obviously think the world revolves round them and their particularly narrow and selective view of the world. As much as my loathing of Thatcher has been documented on here, I don't think she went far enough smashing these fuckers out of existance once and for all.

I read their website, it's like a bad parody http://www.unisonbolton.org/?reload

According to 123 it automatically makes you a 'bigot', apparently.

Anyways, new things I learned about the UAF/EDL after Saturday- nothing. What it proved is that the far right and the far left are as bad as each other, are not as different as they try to make out (Nazi dictatorship or Communist one, which would you like to live under?) and they both are enemies of the 'British' way of life.

The UAF is organised mainly by the SWP so it is really concerned with politics not racism.Attacking the police is an opportunity the rent a mob element can't resist. The EDL has come out of this weekend much the better in terms of propaganda. 2,000 might not seem a lot but given the fact that the whole establishment and media started out against them and that many decent people have been disgusted by the UAF fascists they could grow and grow. There is obviously a lot of latent sympathy for them out there. Which I find very worrying.

Came across another typical EDL supporter today. minding my own business in the pub with my girlfriend and brothers when this tosser walked in and shouted 'EDL' and walked to the bar. OK, ignore the bloke, everyone entitled to their own opinion. then the racism started. Fucking paki this, Nigger that! OK the guys a balloon, Ignore! then my girlfriend went to the bar with an Irish accent (northern Irish) (he didnt even know if she was catholic or protestant) then he splurts out dirty fenian!

Lets just say he wouldnt be saying it again! and again he didnt even know her religion!!

Now that is complete bollocks of the highest order...
