A drinking professional with a snooker habit. I bumped into him once or twice in Belfast. He'd drink pints of Guinness with vodka chasers. He didn't look as bad as in recent photographs but still none too clever.

He's start the day with a quart of scotch and 12 Lambert and Butler, then four or five pints during the morning. A bottle of wine would tide him through dinner, then the Guinness and vodka by afternoon and evening, then half a bottle of brandy before bed. And, would you believe it, he's dead. If you ask me, he was in danger of becoming an alcoholic.

A bit of a prat at times, but spellbinding to watch on his day.

That break in the semi-final of the '82 world championship against Jimmy White when he came back from 0-59 to win the frame and stay in the match, is what sport is all about.

Talking the other day to an old boy I know who used to frequent the Bolton snooker halls way back when,he told me that Alex lived down Halliwell for a while when he first came over. In his own words "he did some shaggin".

He lived a short life but never a dull moment.

Meanwhile, millions of dead people lived perfectly healthy lives and didn't make it to 61 years of age.

R.I.P Alex
