Zico Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 A pub landlady has won the latest stage of her fight to air Premier League games using a foreign TV decoder. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-15162241
Boothy Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 That should put a premium on some of the cheaper cards like DigitAlb for private users then. Sly's approach was a load of bollocks anyway and anti-competitive. It's going to be interesting to see what the knock on effect will be by the time the next bidding comes along though as the rights are worth no where near as much now for Sly.

They could then either show it on the continent themselves or sub licence to foreign TV companies.
Horwich Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Does the premier league not receive about 90% income from overseas sales? and about 10% from UK sales? The best thing about foreign football systems is the ability to watch ANY game. Sky will not offer this service for a while (if at all) so thats why foreign systems are the best. Pub near me were paying over ?1000 per month for sky, now pay ?200 for foreign and have more football on offer.
Boothy Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 To me that opinion is fundementally flawed. There are only a limited amount of games Sky can broadcast, some foreign carriers including Sky Italia etc. broadcast multiple 3pm kick-offs. Further afield, carriers like Abu Dhabi Sport, which can be picked up in Southern England on a big dish, show every EPL game. Also, what kind of money are the league expecting from a pan-European license? It would have to be big bucks. The 10% income figure will become insignificant as the model changes.
Horwich Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Viasat can be picked up in the north of england and show every epl game
Boothy Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 How much is Viasat sub? Abu Dhabi Sport was circa ?400 per annum last season with a tied receiver, which was the only real obstruction to getting it.
Horwich Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 (edited) Viasat is about ?1600 per year I think plus initial set up cost. All 380 prem games. Edited October 4, 2011 by Horwich
hughmungus Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Still not clear, is doesn't apply to non european cards so they are still a no no, and it does say that anything they show with the PremierLeague branding will be copyrighted. So the badges on the shirts may get bigger and we will see more stuff with the name on it. Its never been illegal to buy anyway. BBC site says it has to be clarified by our own courts first so they may take things a different way. Why should those of us at home subsidise greedy landlords who are paying bugger all in comparison.
DIPS Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 We need to decide if we're in Eu or not, not when big corporations see fit. After all didn't we enter the common market, to allow free unrestricted trade, access and an increase in competition? etc
Carlos Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 The way I read it the pubs CAN'T show dodgy sat: The ECJ said the transmission in a pub is a "communication to the public", which means that without the permission of the FA Premier League Murphy is in breach of the copyright directive. This directive would not stop individuals buying foreign decoder cards for domestic use.
Breightmet Boy Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Viasat is about ?1600 per year I think plus initial set up cost. All 380 prem games. 760 games
Sweep Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Viasat is about ?1600 per year I think plus initial set up cost. All 380 prem games. Just ?4.21 per match - a bargain! And Norwich is right, there are only 380 games, not 760
Horwich Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Anyone who wants to watch at home may be better off using a card-sharing website. Think you can get viasat for about ?10p.m
Boothy Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Would Joe Public not get bollocked for saying something like that?
chillo Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 a pub round our end has just had that viasat put in but there renting it just to see how it goes at first its costing them ?240 a month .But sky wanted over 500 quid evidently the price is based on how many seats you have in your pub ,this ones only a dingy little pub but practically all seating so he's fucked
Horwich Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Would Joe Public not get bollocked for saying something like that? Yes Not saying how it can be done, just saying that it is available. There are many websites letting you know how to do it, but we wont be posting any links etc or posting on here how its done.
Carlos Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Would Joe Public not get bollocked for saying something like that? No.
Horwich Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 We will be in the championship soon, so it will be pointless having 3pm prem football.
Sweep Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 But sky wanted over 500 quid evidently the price is based on how many seats you have in your pub ,this ones only a dingy little pub but practically all seating so he's fucked I think it's actually done on the rateable value of the premises, not the mount of seats, otherwise there would be all sorts of weird workarounds
Rembrandt Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 I thought the perceived problem with 'dodgy' TV is that it will stop a lot of fans actually buying match tickets at the stadia. But then the clubs get massive income from the TV rights they're selling. So what if the Prem didn't sell the live TV rights for 3pm kick-offs to any country within 3 hours of GMT. More money at the gate, less money from TV rights. They can't have it all ways. Can they ?
Boothy Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 They'll have to play crowd noise into the grounds like City used to in order to create atmosphere. To be fair, football in general is due a big fuckin' shake up. People are generally ripped off whilst loads of foreign greasers profiteer with a supposed ignorance to the world economy. Actually putting it in perspective, i'm surprised the 'live football experience' isn't more dead on it's arse that it currently is.
Sweep Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 So what if the Prem didn't sell the live TV rights for 3pm kick-offs to any country within 3 hours of GMT. More money at the gate, less money from TV rights. That'll make no difference, as people would still find a way of getting the game from a China or Middle Eastern broadcaster, which will still ensure folk stay inthe pub or at home instead of going to the stadium

Pub near me were paying over ?1000 per month for sky, now pay ?200 for foreign and have more football on offer. Although the majority of TV money now comes from non UK it is mainly from far east, USA etc. Countries in the EU dont pay as much for Premier League games mainly because there is less appetite for them as they have there own leagues which are more dominant. This ruling means fuck all, SKY / Premier League will either get around it using the copyright stuff like branding or they will sell one pan european licence to Sky. The Premier league would (if they had to) sacrafice showing any live games in EU countries at all if it meant they could legally sell it back to UK customers. Its all about UK and long haul TV revenues for them.
