DazBob Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Have I missed sommert? The Vulcan and Flying Flute have been showing 3pm kick-offs for ages. Why the sudden hoo-hah?
jazza Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 (edited) The way that Sky charges pubs is a disgrace, it all goes on the rateable value of the pub. Where I used to live was a really nice small village in Cumbria which was quite expensive to buy into and live in and the rates were high. The pub is a decent size but is purely a drinking mans pub, doesn't do food as it has no kitchen so the landlord, who is a very good mate of mine put in Sky Sports, ESPN, HD, The works to draw custom in and he did well for the first year or two but his property got reassessed on rateable value or whatever it's called and he was priced out the market... His Sky subscription went from ?550 a month to ?960. How the fuck is a small pub in a village of no more than 1000 people supposed to afford that? I mean at ?2.50 a pint that it was then, it is nearly 400 pints to throw down the drain a month to pay for Sky alone. I think he said he had about ?1 profit on a pint so that's 960 pints or 12 barrels before he breaks even and that doesn't consider the summer when there is no football on but he still had to pay full whack. They are robbing bastards. Needlessly to say he had to take it out. Edited October 4, 2011 by jazza
birch-chorley Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Have I missed sommert? The Vulcan and Flying Flute have been showing 3pm kick-offs for ages. Why the sudden hoo-hah? Illegaly. If pubs could do it legaly then they would all do it within months.
BOWTUN BAKED Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Illegaly. If pubs could do it legaly then they would all do it within months. Is it illegal? Pubs round my way have been doing it for years. I don't think there is a law with regards to it, it was just sky trying to bully folk into thinking it was illegal. Surely this court win has cleared that up. Been saying for years this would eventually happen, now watch the money slowly slip away, the good times for players will come to an end too. Expect after quakes people
tylswhite Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 We arent gonna win anything as it is so i hope theres a massive blowout. Its getting more and more impossible just to hang in the premier league and we can virtually write off 12 fixtures before weve kicked a ball.

Nowack Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 Or sky could buy the global rights increasing the premier leagues income and now start showing games at 3.
Zico Posted October 5, 2011 Author Posted October 5, 2011 Illegaly. If pubs could do it legaly then they would all do it within months. pubs in horwich have been for ages you can pretty much take your pick knowing every game will be on somewhere, if not everywhere
DazBob Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 Is it actually 'illegal' though? I mean, the Flying Flute and the Millstone make no secret of the fact they show them. It's hardly as though they're hidden away in the country either. They're slap bang in the town centre. Surely if it were illegal then something would've been done about it by now.

Boothy Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 Have I missed sommert? The Vulcan and Flying Flute have been showing 3pm kick-offs for ages. Why the sudden hoo-hah? There was a crack down a few years back, but since the appeal by this woman darn sarf, it has been a legal grey area. There was case to dismiss the previous rulings and put forward an appeal against the original fine.
Horwich Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Looks like Bolton Police will be targeting the pubs.... (Musnt be much crime happening at mo) http://lacors.conseq.net/lacorsdev/tio/259598 Garry Lee Licensing Officer Bolton Division Your ref: Our ref GL/BWM 6 October 2011 Dear Sir/Madam, ILLEGAL BROADCASTING OF PREMIER LEAGUE FOOTBALL Bolton Wanderers' Football Club has entered into partnership with the Premier League and the Bolton Division of Greater Manchester Police to prevent the illegal broadcasting of live Premier League football matches. In the United Kingdom BSkyB and Setanta have the exclusive rights to broadcast live Premier League matches. It appears, however, that a number of licensees within the Bolton area have purchased foreign satellite systems to enable them to broadcast live Premier League matches without any authority or licence. I am writing to warn you that the use of foreign satellite equipment to broadcast the live Premier League matches is illegal by virtue of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. During the course of the next few weeks and months, investigations will be launched into potential breaches of this legislation. If you are found in possession of foreign satellite equipment, which is being used to broadcast Premier League matches, it is likely that your equipment will be seized and that you may be prosecuted for breaching the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. I should advise you also that, if you are convicted of such an offence, the Courts have the power to impose a wide variety of sanctions, including the forfeiture of your equipment, the forfeiture of your licence, the imposition of financial penalties and/or a term of imprisonment. I am writing to provide you with prior notice that investigations will be carried out in Bolton over the coming weeks and months to determine whether criminal offences have been committed under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. If you are in possession of foreign satellite equipment and you are subsequently found to be broadcasting live Premiership matches, it is likely that criminal proceedings will be commenced against you without further warning. If any licensees are convicted of such offences, it is almost inevitable that their licences to sell alcohol will also be subjected to review in accordance with the Licensing Act 2003. continued I hope that this letter provides you with information, which you can use constructively to ensure that you do not commit criminal offences, or, if you are not in the possession of such equipment, the comfort that actions will be taken against those who breach the legislation. Yours sincerely Garry Lee Divisional Licensing Officer
DazBob Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Crikey. Well, good luck to them trying to seize equipment from the Vulcan!
Danny G Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Or sky could buy the global rights increasing the premier leagues income and now start showing games at 3. Live 3pm games will never legally be shown in this country
Horwich Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 No joke....Just found it on the link via google.
Danny G Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Crikey. Well, good luck to them trying to seize equipment from the Vulcan! Now that would be worth watching
no balls Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 No joke....Just found it on the link via google. I don't want to sound like a middle aged Mail reader, but for goodness sake, haven't they got anything better to do. I understand the issue but, well, arent they just the Sky Police, rather than serving the community?
Horwich Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Looking at it, it may be an old letter. I remember reading something about the police doing this a while ago. Setanta dont have UK rights anymore, so I think the website just changes the date of the doc depending when you visit.
hughmungus Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Thats an old letter, I saw it around 4 years ago in a pub on Bury Road, the bloke who got it asked the old bill last year and was told it wasn't relevant anymore so he ignored it and hasn't had any mither since. Just read the stuff on the Publican site and it says they aint prosecuting anyone till 2013 at the earliest when the Sky contract is up for renewal. So happy days !
Danny G Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 I dont think the Police would get involved anyway, I am sure I read somewere that its not a criminal offence, Sky and the EPL would have to do it through the Civil courts.
Carlos Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 I was going to say Garry Lee has gone down in the world, then I remembered that Mo and Phil Berry actually did go down.
hughmungus Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Do you have a link? Bit long winded :- http://www.morningadvertiser.co.uk/Hot-topics/Foreign-Satellite-TV/Courts-unlikely-to-stop-use-of-European-decoder-cards-in-pubs
birch-chorley Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 My mate used to work for SKY selling to pubs and part of his contract was to spend X ammount of hours per week going round pubs seeing if they use the dodgy. Whilst the use of European Feeds has been going through the european courts a pub using middle eastern coverage is fucked. IMO all that will happen is that they go after the pubs using this copyright law stuff and the next time the rights are up for negotiation SKY will buy a pan european deal so if the european countries dont play ball and stop selling to british subscribers then they wont get live games at all. That or they will show Prem games in full on the continent but 2 hours after KO. Would mean nothing to european viewers to watch in full with a delay but who would go to the pub in the UK to watch a game when you know the result?
