Ani Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 I'm not sure how a sentimental gesture of respect can be described as 'chavtastic' - it seems to be the opposite to me but maybe I don't really understand what the word means ... I actually get the reluctance to retire shirts as in some contexts it is indeed ridiculous but at this moment it feels appropriate to me, given this awful event and the death of Speedo. Maybe I will feel differently in a few weeks or so. But Speedo was not playing for us when he died and if you ask people to name the cluds he was most associated with I doubt we would be in top three (Leeds, Newcastle and Everton above us) FM has actually had a miracle escape, This last week has gone from the lowest of lows to quite a high at the moment, not sure why we would retire his shirt when he is sat up talking and laughing in a hospital bed in London. Globetrotter Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 And if we did retire the number 6 shirt WTF would we do is Muamba made a full recovery - would he play with 6A on his back? Please read the original comment, not just the reaction of other posters. I think there have been plenty of 'scouse' suggestions in recent days and as I say maybe my reaction to the original suggestion would have been better kept to myself until a little time had run out. A couple of points though - I accept that the 'ex-player who killed himself' was no Wanderers legend (like a Bobby Moore was for WHU) but his death was shocking to all of us and the coincidence of this happening to a player wearing the same shirt number (less than 6 months later) is a little too strange for me. I don't know what Fab's % chance of survival was at the time of the incident but considering it happened at a prem league ground it was probably a little higher than the other lads who passed away so I think that he and we are fortunate that the suggestion can seem so ridiculous to some (most) and that he is not another entry into the Wikipedia page of retired shirt numbers. CJG Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 Number 6 shirt doesn't have much going for it since moving to fixed numbers for players. Stubbs got cancer, Warhurst was always injured, Speed died & now Muamba had a heart attack. Quote
Traf Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 (edited) Youri wore 6, didn't he? Edited March 21, 2012 by Traf Quote

Just a general minute of happy jollity to let out our relief. Lets even get the two fat blokes with the flags to run around the entire pitch for the whole minute too. On second thoughts, maybe not, we'd have to get the defibrillators out again. Edited March 21, 2012 by chrisw99 Quote
