What is the dispute about?

The trade union Unite says the strike ballot is about safety standards and terms and conditions. The union says the industry is too "fragmented" and wants a "national forum" which would hold the employers to account over conditions. It claims some workers have had their contracts repeatedly renegotiated and some have had six different pension providers in 10 years. Unite also says shorter delivery deadlines have created a "turn and burn" culture. Unite insist the dispute is not about pay.

Secondly, the strike is about working conditions which impact quite a lot on the rest of us. I don't how many will admit to being comfortable with the idea of drivers of fuel being forced to take less rest or having to drive faster and more dangerously to meet deadlines, but as a person who occasionally goes on roads, I'd be quite keen for them to be pretty squared away H&S wise. This obviouslt is of no concern to most of you who doubtless all have proper jobs. We're not exactly in Red Robbo / Scargill territory here.

After the public outcry over the Teachers days off to watch Wimbledon and catch up on Xmas shopping, Unite knew full well the country would kick off if they mentioned pay. So they turn it around to conditions and H&S. Clever.

Not trusting the cunts as far as I could kick them off a cliff, I've had a look on the HSE Prosecutions Website and cannot see a single case brought against a fuel supplier (The seven companies involved - Wincanton, DHL, BP, Hoyer, J W Suckling, Norbert Dentressangle and Turners - are responsible for supplying 90% of the UK's 8,706 petrol stations).

 

So if H&S is as bad as the unions say, why havn't the HSE picked up on anything before now especially after Buncefiled the eyes and ears of the HSE would have been all over the industry ever since?

 

Because they're talking shit.

 

Also, all employers have to comply with the Employment Act, which protects workers to the hilt (and rightly so). There are thousands of no-win no-fee shithouses out there who'd run to tribunal on a workers behalf if the fucking kettle didn't work. If conditions were so bad and breaking the laws the rest of the working population comply with then why don't Unite say 'hey, here are loads of tribunal cases to prove our point'?

Now I've been called a commie sympathiser on here a few times but this H&S card is misleading.

 

I have a friend who has recently shelled out (see what I did there) a lot of money to put himself through the additional H&S tickets to reach fuel tanker status from normal HGV. He's embarrassed by the strike threat as his pay has gone up 50% and rest stops and driving speeds are strictly monitored and regulated by trackers compared to the multidrop supermarket deliveries he was doing before.

 

The "turn and burn" bit is also misleading. I commissioned a number of fuel tanker storage and delivery systems for Network rail back along and a fuel lorries that turned up to fill up bulk tanks had flow control systems to prevent pressurisation. i.e. delivery will take as long as it needs.

The point is that according to those in the industry, the proposed alterations will impact on H&S. The way things are is fine. And obviously it works, becasue as you've said there haven't been any charges brought against any suppliers.

You may, thanks. If a bloke driving a fuel tank is told he has to have a rest every five hours instead of every four, the presence of a tachograph doesn't make him, or anyone else on the road, any safer.

 

Look, I'm as cyncial towards the unions as the next man and haven't encountered strike action I've thought was justified in a long time and am well aware that they ramp things up whenever the Tories are in. Their explanation for why they want to strike is piss poor, but I'm not going to go along with the usual kneejerk 'it's a union and I don't trust them therefore they must be communists therefore it must be pay and they must be cunts' stuff. In comparions with other sectors, like that fire brigades prick a few years ago and that train driver bellend, this lot seem to have a genuine grievance which due to the fact they're being asked to take risks driving fuel around and not loaves of bread, deserves more than the usual abuse. But yes, the immediate leap to strike action is as annoying to me as anybody else.
