Why the fuck should we have to find 25%, in addition to paying for our own

That, in my view, is unfair

Because it is an essential (and dangerous) service.

Or would you rather outsource it to G4S or the like to save money?

And are they more valuable than butchers, bakers and clothes designers?

This keeps coming down to emotive views.

When you've had a good twatting by a burglar and ended up in ICU, all that will be reassessed.

Judges. The Judicial Pension Scheme is so favourable that it isn't recognised as such by HMRC. Consequently the contributions are not tax deductible. But then again they are 3.2% or less, for which Judges benefit from double allocation and build up a maximum pension in only 20 years instead of 40. The logic of this was that judges had only limited access to personal pensions, or their predecessors retirement annuities before appointment. High-flying barristers wishing to have a secure 9-5 life could take a cut in salary but with it have the security of a top class pension. The new set-up allows tax relief, so judges paying 9% gross contributions (those earning over £150k pa), actually pay under 5% net.

The Hutton Report (which is at the root of the Firemen's problem) has led to these major changes. But judges under 51 and a half were allowed to remain in the old scheme. How many judges do you think are under that age? [Clue - it's less than 50%). There have been grave mutterings of discontent but no sign of a strike. But a string of early retirements could lead to rather more non-barristers being appointed than originally envisaged.

Nurses. I had the highest regard for nurses - until I spent a week in hospital in 2006. I would say less than 10% of those I encountered had any interest in the patients, and we really were treated as vegetables. Furthermore none of the nurses who attempted to obtain a reading from me actually carried out the procedure correctly. In fact if the consultant (whose initials were PPI) had not come in from the golf course on the Saturday morning to do it himself I could still be there! As it is I got home at 5 to 3 just in time to watch Bolton v Spurs on the box. I know there are some great nurses, including on here, but I suspect they have a genuine vocation, which those I encountered in Crewe largely did not.

Doctors. Generally good but with exceptions. Last time I was in A&E the triage doctor said I had no head injuries, so I pointed out where there was blood seeping out. And in my youth GPs were on call for their patients in the evenings and overnight. Nowadays if a doctor is called out it is overwhemingly likely that you've never seen him before and will never see him again. Basically they are paid for work they no longer do.

Police. I've never met a bent fireman, but I've met plenty bent policemen. The number of dismissals at the most senior level is truly astounding, but my experience has largely been at the level of sergeant. And almost every force has had those on the make selling interesting stories to the press illegally.
