Winter/snow Watch 2013/14

Get your thermals on

Next month sees the start of severe weather hitting our glorious country and hopefully cutting Scotland adrift from us.

My mucker up there who works for the Met Office, says November will bring very bad snowfalls and possibly record low temperatures for that time of the year.

He was pretty accurate re the nce summer we had and is adamant this winter will be severe.

All goes back to the ''blockers'' he told me about early this year.

I did read the coldest temperature ever recorded in our region was -21.1c in Ambleside, can't remember when, but not that long ago...

Just checked, it was ages ago (1940) - I reckon' their thermometer was faulty too...

That was another very bad winter.

My mother was working in Lancaster and alternate weekends she went to her elder sister's in Gargrave, near Skipton. She got snowed in there for six weeeks.

In normal years the Army would have been called out, but apparently they were already fully committed elsewhere.

My aunt was the school dinner cook, and ended up baking bread for the villagers if they brought ingredients to the school.

And the snow was up to the window sills - not drifts, just the regular depth.

Only remember the 63 one being a bad winter and my school never shutting, walking the 2 miles when the school bus never showed up was fun. Always a blazing coal fire in the house when you got home though. I think the canal near bye was froze solid for 4 months.

Coach numbers Graham used to tell me about the winter of 1963 every time I went into the weaving shed.
