this is what frustrates me most about this all

whatever you think about DF - I'm pretty certain when he took the job on, it wasn't with a view to clearing out all the players, bringing in lesser quality (and they will be), then starting again and waiting to see what happens

based on Palace, I'm sure PG said something along the lines of "right lad, you've done a belting job at Palace by taking them on this good run of form, we think you could do even better at Bolton with more resources and get us back up, are you up for it"

and he said "aye"

not "give us a few years to get Bolton down to the level where Palace where at, start again, and let's see eh"

which is what a lot of folk who aren't "pissed off" seem to be suggesting is what is now the plan, or what they are prepared for - fair enough but that's not what he was brought in to do

he hasn't got the players performing, the results are shite, and it's hard work to watch performances like last night

he's really not doing much to make me think he's owt other than very average at best and won't take us anywhere, no matter what the squad is, I hope we're not here in 12 months with a side full of Danns going "yeah but it took him a bit longer at Palace so let's wait and see"

still, hope am wrong, etc as right now I don't see him going anywhere

you never know, we might get dawson in jan and everything will be ok again

But it is quite possible that PG said to him "you worked wonders on a tight budget at Palace. With Ffp in mind we need to become self sufficient. The owner and I will give you time to reduce the wage bill and rebuild the squad and we have great facilities for you to build on, fancy it?"

if that was the case, they probably would've said "don't be offering wheater that new deal" then

anyway

i'm sure they didn't say that to him, given the position we were in when we sacked Coyle, our expectations, wage bill and squad

OC was sacked because we weren't on course for being where we want or expect to be, DF was expected to sort this, am sure of that, he nearly did, but as time goes on, it seems like he doesn't know how to

I'm sure that when he came the remit was to get promotion either last season or this. Promotion didn't happen last year and won't be happening this year, so I would expect that the expectations and plan have changed. It may be that he has now been told that as we won't be going up, he's got to "clear the decks" and start again and is being given the time to do this........obviously, this may not be the case at all, as the fans aren't advised/consulted on this sort of thing

Point is no one knows. My guess it is a combo of the two. Promotion last season from where he took over was a long shot. We then didn't exactly compete with many in this summers transfer market with our one in, one out, keep the change transfer policy.

after seeing how the team set out and performed last night, I'm not sure how clearing the decks will help

7 of them were his and he seems pretty keen on CYL, Pratley and a few others

as no one knows, all we can really do is judge him on the performances and way he set's his team out rather than make excuses one way or another

and if we do that, it's a pretty grim assessment all in all, regardless of who plays and when, the odd good spell here and there, but in general, pretty grim

Yep, completely agree that the home games have been really tough to watch and think we are in a tough position for some time to come too, probably at least another season after this.

Would not want him getting judged or sacked any time soon though.

Bn are clueless

I removed your four superfluous words

Football clubs (and particularly managers) can get very prissy if backed into a corner by the media - that's why you see so many rows with journos from the daily's - cos they don't work directly for the clubs. Last weeks with AVB and Neil Ashton was great/car crash telly. As for the BN I can only say that over at Shrewsbury they ask the same mundane/inane questions every week and always tend to avoid the "do you think you're going to get binned off any time soon" approach. One or two over there have had the dreaded crook around their necks. You can sense Dan from the club having to toe the party line in his post match, where I'd wager a little bit of him would like to go for the circus act (the juggler). On a more positive note, thanks very much for letting us have Tom (Chris) Eaves back as he's already off and running. We'll take Becks 'n all if he's going?

Putting young players in who aren't ready at this moment in time would make them cannon fodder for the moaners.

Aye but young Riley being injured all the time has turned him in to the 2nd coming of Cafu in some eyes.

Hopefully the lads who've gone out on loan can come back ready for the 1st team picture (as is the usual progression for academy prospects) or can be flogged for a few bob a'la Ward at Huddersfield

Or as seems to be the case at Bolton, just sent out on loan again and again and again until released at the end of their contract without barely a sniff of playing for the first team.

Riley certainly falls into the same bracket as Al Habsi and Craig Davies................the less they play the better they become in some peoples eyes.

Riley had a good game once, that's all

You can keep him, he won't make it at Bolton.

Hmmphh!

Home games, especially midweek, are becoming a bit of a chore.

The tactics away from home are working, doing it at home doesn't. Changing a couple of players to ones with a bit more creativity doesn't change formation or mentality.

To put last night into perspective, Hudds had one shot on target last night, ONE. A 30 yard screamer, that does not make Hudds a better side than us, nor a better side last night. Letting them have possession without pressing them makes it look like it.

Take any of our numerous first half chances last night & it's a different forum today.

Just confused why the changes in defence last night?! Anyone know?

In general agree with this but the numerous chances bit, they had more chances than us and that's because DF sets team up not too press the opposition I have no problem with that away, at home I have a big problem with it so much so that if he continues with that tactic I would be happy to see the club dispense of his services.

And how many of these ex academy prospects have gone on to success?

You've Nobby, JOB and RVT with sam but no others getting a look in at a club of boltons desired stature.

Danny ward who hit the post last night

Basham whos playing for blackpool

Job for Malc; post a team of ex-Bolton Academy players currently playing in the Premier/Football League.

Matt Tubbs, Danny Ward, Danny Livesey to the 3 above perhaps.

I'd have thought that his remit was to try and get into the play offs whereby we could afford to keep hold of our "superstars". After the season ended with us falling short of the play offs, I think the target will have changed.to stabilizing the club and building up again. This also coincides with my (apparently idiotic) belief that Dougie was trying to put our highest paid players in the shop window in pre-season and during August, and when that failed he dropped them and we started playing better.

We have been generally on an upward trend this season (admittedly not the best football to watch) - last night was a blip against a very organized Huddersfield team.

But then, what do I know? I'm over the pond*.

*this last statement is not aimed at you, ex_midlandwhite. More generically at some of our denser members.

but we had our worst start in 100+ years after finishing 7th last season

I do not see progress

thing is, if they take their chances then it's also different, they may have only had one on target, but they hit the post and created other good opportunities

this is assuming you mean chances for us like Beckford's miss

we had 2 good ones in a minute IIRC and it was a good save from their keeper from the corner, ours just never seemed as sustained as their possession/pressure

as an aside, i'm also worried because I missed the millwall home game and haven't seen us win at home yet, last time this happened was 2 years, when i missed the stoke game

and aye, def becoming a chore

I haven't seen us win a game all season.

I haven't seen us win a game all season.

it's only 4 months gone!
