First Away Day

Apologies if it's been done before (it probably has), but standing outside Hillsborough yesterday got me thinking. And that's not so easy these days.

My first away day should have been Hillsborough. My dad & older brother went, so I have the programme, but they wouldn't take me - they said the crowd would be too big at a FA Cup quarter-final, the club's first quarter-final since, erm, .......... oh, the previous season. It was 65,000 so maybe they were right.

Instead my first away day came the next season, also the FA Cup, at St Andrews. Crowd of 56,800 but I was a year older & bigger.

Maybe what triggered my thoughts was the programme shop outside Hillsborough. They had Wanderers programmes in the window from that era of games I was at. Enough to make anyone think.

I guess that makes me officially a .......... an ......... a mature fan. Definitely not a Werthers 'owd codger'.

My first away game was Blackburn away, would have been 1998 I think?

Oldham in the snow, 1978.

Still got the programme and a special message from the manager:

Bury away for my 13th birthday with a couple of mates and my younger cousin, think I went to Blackburn away shortly after with my dad on a corporate, sat next to some actor from brookside.

Blackburn with mi Dad c1967

They murdered us 3-1 from memory

Remember the stands at Ewood

Huddersfield Away (with NB) around 1990 I think. My mate had just passed her driving test so it was a bit of an adventure getting there

It was Sheff utd at the arse end of 99, think we won that game.

Recall bumping into our teachers from school wasted at the game which was amusing.

Man U in the FA cup.

Queued for ages with my dad for those tickets.

Blackburn away for me - April 81 I think - Howard Kendall player manager for them. 0-0.

Pretty sure it was Blackburn away on the first day of 1976/77. We lost 3-1. Hot day. Loads of trouble.

Ha ha, her driving has never got any betterer. It was Emley in the cup at their ground wasn't it? Parked her mum's car on some rough estate fully expecting not to see it again :)

3-0 FA Cup defeat at Coventry. Remember loads singing Reet Petite at HT.

Sunderland Boxing day at Roker Park late 80's at a guess

Grimsby 1st day of the season in 93(?). The 3-3 one

Just been on BWFC Stats and I was miles out. Bury was my 14th birthday we lost 2-1, Villa 3-1 win with my dad in the home end was my 13th birthday and therefore my 1st away game. The Blackburn corporate was 1999 and we lost 3-1.

Oldham around 70, couldn't take my eyes of the Chaddy End, It was fucking ace. I can't even remember who won but vividly remember thinking our town must be hardest in the World..

Don't particularly remember but I first started going properly in 1980/81 and was at Notts County on the opening day of the season. Started with a 2-1 defeat

Leeds 1982 at Christmas time, a bright idea of my brothers that one, I was only 11 (he was 21).

Port Vale in bout 71-72, 2-0 down when my dad decided it was time to go...ended up 2-2!! Think JB GOT both

Far too long ago to remember but do remember my lad's first away, Charlton 23 March 2002 for his 9th birthday.

Sat in the Antigallican when Mrs Dee rang to see how he was, "yeah he's fine he's gone to the ground" says I, "where are you" says she, "in the pub" says I, at which point I had a sudden mobile signal failure!

I will point out I wasn't totally irresponsible, he was with his mate who was 12.

Bury away on a Friday night. 98/99 I think

Lost 2-1

Bury in 1991 Brown scored, it was sunny

13/12/74 Fulham away on the supporters club on my own won 2-1 just checked 8700 on Gary Jones and Whatmore nearly got filled in by Chelsea on the open end behind the net, just 10 years old.

hull away   that friday night

I bet there aren't many better debuts than that!

Will always be gutted I couldn't get to that game.

Scarborough away for me.

My dad convinced my mum for us all to go away for the weekend. What a turn up when wanderers we're playing in the exact same town!!

Should have gone to Blackpool and rode the donkeys rather than watching the donkeys in white that day!!!
