Apologies if it's been done before (it probably has), but standing outside Hillsborough yesterday got me thinking. And that's not so easy these days.

 

My first away day should have been Hillsborough. My dad & older brother went, so I have the programme, but they wouldn't take me - they said the crowd would be too big at a FA Cup quarter-final, the club's first quarter-final since, erm, .......... oh, the previous season. It was 65,000 so maybe they were right.

 

Instead my first away day came the next season, also the FA Cup, at St Andrews. Crowd of 56,800 but I was a year older & bigger.

 

Maybe what triggered my thoughts was the programme shop outside Hillsborough. They had Wanderers programmes in the window from that era of games I was at. Enough to make anyone think.

 

I guess that makes me officially a .......... an ......... a mature fan. Definitely not a Werthers 'owd codger'.

It's either Rotherham away when Tony Cunningham scored (2-2) or Wigan away on a night match and we met Steve Thompson before the game and he gave us free tickets,think we lost 0-1

Think that's mine. 1-1 Michael Brown scored. Keith Hackett was ref. I was mesmerised by what seemed like 10 thou of our lot ballooning and getting away with it. Was 10 year old, remember thinking fuck camelot this is a proper day/night out. Glad I caught them days before football lost its soul.

I've not a clue as my dad took me to one when I was younger and it's on the list of things I never got round to asking him about before he died

Rovers away in our purple strip in 1997, lost 3-1. Thommo got sent off early on for taking out Jeff Kenna. Best remembered for Blakey missing a sitter at 2-1 only for Jason Wilcox to kill us off 30 seconds later.

Blackpool Feb 68, Taylor for us Suddick for them in the 1-1 draw. Stood on the covered kop with a crowd of 19000, the Bolton fans were even mental in those days with fights breaking all around.

Hull Feb 76 is the first one I remember.

West Ham 2-1 Wanderers at the end of our first season back up, Djorkaeff scored ours but our seats were pretty much level with the grass so couldn't tell what was happening.

 

It was rubbish, and to think that is my only Upton Park visit to date, missed some great days there since then.

Far too long ago to remember but do remember my lad's first away, Charlton 23 March 2002 for his 9th birthday.

 

Sat in the Antigallican when Mrs Dee rang to see how he was, "yeah he's fine he's gone to the ground" says I, "where are you" says she, "in the pub" says I, at which point I had a sudden mobile signal failure!

 

I will point out I wasn't totally irresponsible, he was with his mate who was 12.

Remember it was a boiling hot easter saturday, bitter sweet memories that weekend, the match on saturday with my dad, and on the sunday he had a fatal heart attack. still got to spend his last day watching the whites in action,

Ha ah I remember that game about 20-30 of us went on there end sad that fancy going on York away end looking for a rumble. I remember they had one lad about 6 foot 7 in a camouflage jacket and that was about it.
