There's some odd stat that shows it might be better to have your better goal scorers going later as the pressure increases and there is an increased chance of making mistakes.

So if a shootout goes a distance you have your weaker players taking more significant slots with a higher percentage of mistakes when it would be better to have your better players in these positions.

But as hardly anyone tries it, I'd say there isn't enough data to back it up.

But what if they don’t get to the 4th/5th pen taker?

It does seem bizarre him not taking one, could easily have been Mane not taking one as he was Senegal's 5th taker, he ends up a hero whilst people will question Salah and the tactics/glory hunting/etc

Backfired on Ronaldo against Spain years ago, certainly could never see Kane being 5th taker for England.

I think the point is don't just put your very best first or your donkey centre back. 

Get your best five and move up in skill as the shootout goes on I believe the idea goes to manage the luck element a bit better.

But as you say might not get to that stage, it's all a bit of luck anyway.

Get your best to go third then.
