Spot on....as good as he is, and he really is unreal.

No defensive midfielder should near the Ballon d'or ever.

That Beckenbauer geezer - pffffft.

The best player is the best player, no matter which position.

Dapo Afolayan scored a cracking goal at the weekend for St. Pauli . A late equaliser to earn his club 1-1 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach

Wait till they replace him with Victor

Matt Le tissier was scoring outrageous goals on a weekly basis back in the day. Probably wouldn't get near a starting line these days because he doesn't press enough 🤦‍♂️

Couldn't get in the England side for similar reasons

Just look what's happened to my Jack :(

He’s the one that comes to mind straight away when you talk about it being coached out of him.

He’d have been running things as a no.10 in 2006

Completely agree, I’m not for one minute underplaying how good Rodri is - he’s world class.

My point was more that in a conversation about how exciting football used to be, and the superstars that have disappeared from the game, I’m not sure you’d have had a defensive midfielder in the first 4 names you come up with in the mid 2000s when you’re talking about superstars. But now, Rodri comes to mind because you quickly get through those that get you off your seat, score amazing goals, create excitement, score insane amounts etc etc and so you end up at the world class defensive midfielder that just keeps the game moving.

*caveat to this is that there was a role named after a defensive midfielder at that time (CAMPO role), but even so I don’t think he’d have come to mind ahead of ~20/25 other players at that time in terms of reason that football is exciting.

Edit - someone’s going to read that and pick me up on the fact that Rodri does a lot more than just “keep the game moving”, I know, I’m just trying to emphasise the point. He’s not highly ‘entertaining’ to the neutral.

Leicester are that bad I reckon we could give them a game

Watching that earlier and makes you think would you rather be in their position or ours ?

Know a Leicester fan who this time last season said as much as he loved winning games and getting promoted the best thing about the championship was no var, and wasn't looking forward to going back to it

Saints fan on R5 yesterday, he's still doing all the away days for the craic but stopped going home games be cause 25 defeats this season and it's not enjoyable

Pitiful experience for those fans of Leicester and Soton, soul destroying stuff.

Another fascinating little MNF segment later on though with Craig Bellamy. Really interesting listening to his ideas, approach, standards and non-negotiables as a manager

Still be unreal and not win that award, it can be both.

Great result for arsenal

Just caught up with highlights, rice's free kicks were absolutely unreal

First time he's scored a free kick in his career tonight and he gets 2 in one game

Looks like curtois kept the score down from th highlights and only one half chance for mbappe
