Look at the reception the Queen got in Germany recently, no politician would have got that. I don't want to be like any other European country, it might not make sense (like a lot of British inventions/quirks) but it works so all for keeping it.

This clears it up for me really, we make a profit from the deal we have with the Royal family. Why on earth would we want to go back on it?

I don't mind the Royal family at all - but when people talk about how much they cost, there is never an accurate figure quoted.

Whilst they may only take £37.9M via the Civil List (which really is fuck all in the grand scheme of things), this doesn't really take into account the true cost of them - their security bill must be absolutely massive, and this is funded directly from by the state as far as I am aware.

 

I'm certainly sure that we're still up on "the deal" though and I hope they stay around for a long time.

 

Those people that really seem to hate them are perfectly free to leave the country at any time.

The crown estates profit is how much the various properties owned by the royal family are valued at. I'm not sure how that profit can be attributed to the Royals directly. If there was a revolution tomorrow and that property came into public ownership it would still be valued the same irrespective.

Similarly when people talk about tourism, if the royals suddenly didn't exist, people would presumably still visit the UK to see Buckingham palace etc....I'm not sure the ongoing presence of the royals is necessary to drive tourism entirely.

 

However, I'm not that bothered either way. We either pay for a royal family or for some elected head of state as stated above. Neither would be particularly good value. The royals do a lot for charity and at least are more or less respectable nowadays.
