Farrelli Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 I think Forest winning the European Cup was more outrageous than Porto. Forest had only just been promoted to Division 1 (at our expense). Porto are a consistently top club in their league. Both are very good managers and inspirational characters but Clough wins it for me! Quote
Pablo Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 I think he is ace, top manager, and a proper top WUM. Quote
mannyroad58 Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 Mourinho is brilliant at what he does when he's winning but is a very bad loser as he's showed with his comments from yesterdays defeat Quote
Zico Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 its good for those who think mourinho is the bollocks that we can play the porto card whats the porto card? only winning the UEFA cup then the Champs League in successive seasons? his 2 unbeaten home records aren't to be sniffed at either - 150 first time round and 45 the second as for money, he plys his trade at the top clubs in europe, they all spend money, so it's a level enough playing field - and he keeps winning stuff Quote
Casino Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 i can see i wasn't clear it was meant to read that his results with porto show he is a good un Quote
davidjack Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 Clough didn't just win the European Cup (when it was the European Cup ie only the very best in each country competing against each other) with a side that two years earlier had been in the second tier of English football (and had no real history or huge support), he only went and won it again the season after, to prove it wasn't a fluke. Different times, but fucking hell. Quote
Casino Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 the champions league, despite its inaccurate name, is miles stronger now the 3rd best is spain would piss all over the champs of uzbekistan Quote
Farrelli Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 CL is stronger but Porto coming top two in a four team group is a piece of piss. The CL is designed so that the strongest 16 teams end up in the KO stage. One bad away result in the old format and it was curtains! Quote
Carlos Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Coming through a group (which contained Real Madrid so was actually one of three) got Porto to the round before the Quarters. In the European Cup, this was known as the Second Round! At this stage, Porto drew Man Utd. Forest played AEK Athens who had beaten Porto in the First Round. Beat that Malc. Quote
MalcolmW Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 the champions league, despite its inaccurate name, is miles stronger now the 3rd best is spain would piss all over the champs of uzbekistan True, but then the top 3 teams in the Uzbekistan League play in the Asian Champions League. Quote

MalcolmW Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 not when forest were winning the european cup, they didn't (he says hoping hes reet and they were part of the soviet pyramid ) Wiki: "In August 1979, Pakhtakor made it back to the Soviet Top League, but shortly thereafter disaster struck the club and Soviet football. During a flight to play Dinamo Minsk, Pakhtakor's plane was involved in a mid-air collision over Dniprodzerzhynsk, Ukraine. All 178 people aboard both planes involved died." Quote

davidjack Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Surely it was more of a test of the best in the old days - only the top team qualified and there was no fucking about with leagues. So United wouldn't have won it in 99 cos they didn't win the title the year before, for example. And as already mentioned, Clough almost did it with Derby too, even before he transformed another average Div 2 side in Forest. Unbelievable. Nobody's saying Mourinho doesn't know how to win things, just that Clough took it to a whole new level. And let's not pretend Porto were minnows, as great an achievement as that was. Quote

Before he started at Hartlepool they had had to seek re-election in 5 of the previous 6 seasons (nowadays they'd have gone down). In his only complete season there they finished eighth Quote
