Whizz Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Someone point me in the right direction please. I'm after a mountain bike for the eldest lad. 10 years old, 150 cm 4'11" tall. Any recommendations? Was thinking of getting it this weekend if these sales are all they're cracked up to be. Quote
MancWanderer Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 FWIW don't go really cheap/bottom end shit that the supermarkets sell cos they really are shit Depends on your budget and what you want The cheaper you go the heavier they are and don't think that heavy necessarily means sturdy - heavy just means cheap steel and cheap components that break easily Is it a bike that he's just gonna tootle around on, chuck on the ground, and leave lying around for some scrote to nick? In that case, fair enough go bottom end If it's summat that you want for him to properly get interested in riding you have two options. 1. Bottom end Halfords - not bad, decently made, decent components, decent price - you might get one under or around £100 2. Bottom end proper bike shop - Cooksons, Evans, etc - you'll pay more, maybe £200 but you're getting a good bike from a top name brand - if shopping at one of these places look at 2015 or even 2014 models that they are looking to shift and haggle - they are just the same as car dealers and are committed to buy specific volumes each year from certain brands so tend to do decent deals on older models just to get rid Quote
Whizz Posted November 27, 2015 Author Posted November 27, 2015 Ok, thanks for that. Just been looking on Decathlon site at the Btwin bikes. They look decent. Quote
MancWanderer Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Yeah forgot about Decathlon. Bottom(ish) end with everything but good for the price Quote
Site Supporter only1swanny Posted November 27, 2015 Site Supporter Posted November 27, 2015 buy a bike buy a bike go to charnock richard cycles... Quote
Site Supporter Winchester White Posted November 27, 2015 Site Supporter Posted November 27, 2015 How much are looking to pay? Different places have good deals at different price ranges. Quote
Whizz Posted November 27, 2015 Author Posted November 27, 2015 Don't really want to go above 300 quid, around 200 ideally but want something half decent, which is more important than cost. Quote
Burndens Bogs Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Decathlon + buy the best you can for 200 - 300 would be my advice Quote
Moderators Carlos Posted November 27, 2015 Moderators Posted November 27, 2015 I bought from Decathlon in that price range and it's ok now it's been back for a service and the gears fixed. Quote
Bigtoe Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 I bought from Decathlon in that price range and it's ok now it's been back for a service and the gears fixed. I got a rockrider 8 from there a couple of years ago. Been a good bike but could do with a once over. How much did the service cost? Quote
Moderators Carlos Posted November 27, 2015 Moderators Posted November 27, 2015 I think it was £50 but had to have a wheel replaced as it was fucked. Quote
mickbrown Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Aye Decathlon are good. Go Outdoors have a range called calibre that get cracking reviews Quote
BOWTUN BAKED Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Get him a Raleigh Chopper or Grifter, proper bikes for 10 year olds, bezzing about with their mates. Quote
Members DazBob Posted November 27, 2015 Members Posted November 27, 2015 Fucking hell, it's for a 10 year old. As long as its not the cheapest in the shop and its got a decent name on it he'll be happy. Quote
Whizz Posted November 28, 2015 Author Posted November 28, 2015 Fucking hell Daz, Cheese has hacked your account. The reason for asking is I don't know what's a decent name and I don't want to be repairing it all the time but also don't want to spend a fortune on it. I was shocked at the difference in prices. jayjayoghani Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 A growth spurt in a couple of years too? Quote
Burndens Bogs Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 (edited) Don't be tempted to buy full suspension, because at that pricepoint it would be an absolute bag of shoite and weigh a ton.Hardtail (front suspension only) is the way to go. This looks like a decent deal at Decathlon and would be a nice bike for a 10 year old if you can get the right size - At his age maybe 24" wheels rather than 26", but ask their advice - http://www.decathlon.co.uk/24-rockrider-500-kids-mountain-bike-id_8309974.html This also looks a decent bike for a 10 year old at Halfords, it would be the better bike out of the 2 that I've linked - http://www.halfords.com/kids-zone/kids-bikes/junior-bikes/carrera-blast-boys-mountain-bike-24 When he outgrows the bike or gets fed up with it, they sell like hot cakes on Ebay in spring or summer. Nobster Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Go to Halfords and have a look at the Carrera as linked above, they are great bikes for the money and as your lad grows and you need to upgrade they are easy to sell and normally hold there value. Quote
Whizz Posted November 28, 2015 Author Posted November 28, 2015 Cheers for that BB. I will have a look this afternoon. Quote
Site Supporter Tonge moor green jacket Posted November 28, 2015 Site Supporter Posted November 28, 2015 No expert but one thing I'd insist on now is disc brakes. Blocks are old hat, and in the conditions round here they get wet and gritty, wear quickly, don't work so well, and need replacing soon. No doubt some serious biker will advise in more depth Quote
Moderators Carlos Posted November 28, 2015 Moderators Posted November 28, 2015 Front disc on mine. That's another thing about Decathlon! Bought mine and went on Sky Ride, on Park Rd I was getting overtaken by kids with stabilisers despite pedalling like fuck. Turns out the front brake was permanently on! Cunts. Quote
Burndens Bogs Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 That Carrera Blast at Halfords has cable Disc brakes front and rear - they'll stop well enough. The bike is reduced by £100 this weekend so it's a no brainer really as you'd still get £100 - £150 back for it if you sold it in 2 years time. I reckon you'll have a very happy 10 year old lad on Xmas morning! Quote
Underpants Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Get a cheep(ish) one. No point on spending big on a child. £300 is more than I would want to spend on a kids iron. John at Green Machine on Lee Ln in Horwich is a sound bloke. He will get whatever you want in for whatever price you want to pay. Quote
fishbulb Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 (edited) Decathlon's stuff is very good for the price. Maybe have a look at Edinburgh Bike Cooperative in Manchester. Their Revolutiion bikes get good reviews. http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/browse/bicycles Edited November 28, 2015 by fishbulb Quote
