You should let kids make their own minds up about things. Stop forcing your ideals on them and in time, if they are bright enough, they'll make the right decisions.

So let sky tv, media and big clubs' marketing depts decide for them?

As a youngster i was a citeh fan as my older cousin, who i idolised, was. Theres a picture of me at a football party at Castle Leisure centre in my city goalie shirt.

My dad took me to my first game in 92 and that was that.

My brother ent through a phase of being a dirty red for similar reasons but that soon changed.

My lads 6... He said to me yesterday he thinks were getting relegated... I thought he may be wavering, but insists he still wants to go.

Also re FIFA, my lad has epic games against Accrington, with Bannan bossing the midfield! Mix it up with Brazil and Barca and he is content.

Kids are like sunflowers, each will find their own way to the sun... Just need a little nurturing

As a kid I was bombarded with pop music, didn't mean I bought it. If your kid has half a brain he'll decide the best course of action.

Doomed

I didn't choose my football team. It was given to me by my dad.

The possibility of supporting someone else was just not an option.

There was no hard sell, I just went to a game aged about seven and that was it.

Times were different in the early seventies and I think that is what I miss most compared to the modern game.

Same here. That's all it takes.

Remember most of my schoolmates supporting Liverpool or Man United, having the cheek to take the piss. "Have you ever been to watch them?" was all it took to shut them up.

If we sell/are forced to sell our youngsters off for next to nowt, then I would be sick and fed p

I've thought long & hard about my feelings when this thread started.

I've kept quiet until I could put myself in a quiet calm reflective mood about it, so I didn't let my snap judgement be explosive or negative about our situation.

So, here it is, now's my answer.

I was sick to the stomach, I felt it, physically sick to the stomach, a feeling of gut wrenching worry & stress & I thought why? Why should I feel this? It's only a football club, it's just a team like 92 others, or more so nowadays!

Then I remembered.

I remembered my great grandfather stood at Pikes Lane, my Grandfather stood on the Embankment, '46 he was there, '53 &'58 finals, I've still got the programme my father as a child has wrote on, changing the players names in pen & strange doodles.

My father stood on the Embankment as a boy, the Manny Rd North as a yoof, travelled the country in the days before motorways, last minute decisions at the end of drunken nights of a Friday, jump in his van with his mates , still drunk, travel through the night on A roads to back water shitholes like Ipswich, sleep in the van & wake to scrounge comps off the players as the coach arrived & go back to the pub to top up. The stories of their annoyance of Franny Lee being sold & the lack of ambition of the board & how we we're skint, a story that would keep on repeating itself!!

Then years later me & my brother would be dragged round the shops of Bowtun Town centre by my mother , a nightmare for young lads , we wanted to sit in the pub, listen to my dad & his friends recant they're tales of Wanderers adventures. Back in the day when kids weren't welcome in such establishments, nor were their mothers :)

We'd be dropped back off at the pub about 10 to three (depending on opposition team) , walked down the Manny Rd, sat on the railings of the Embankment, buy a carton of Vimto & a Wagon Wheel off the guy with the tray round his neck , cheer, shout, scream.... You know the scenario, you've lived the script.

Then we didn't live in Bolton, but we were Boltonians, we were Bowtun Baked! We've lived abroad, we've lived down south, we've returned home to see family & friends, we attended matches as part of the schedule of returning home. We did sways near were we lived, home & abroad. It was & is a big part of our families identity to who we are as people & where we're from.

We moved back north, I was a child of the Embankment, a returning yoof of the Paddock & a young man of the Manny Rd North. I was forth generation and proud.

We've boomed & bust, boomed & bust, I glimpsed us rise again .....& fall, like my father before me, & fall, & fall.... & rise, & rise , & rise.... & begin to fall again, to today.

Then I thought about this & I wasn't sick to the stomach anymore, ... I was angry!

Very Angry!

I thought the boom & bust cycle was over, we had a plan, we were being a whole new sustainable world, New ground, amazing training facilities, an all singing all dancing academy, office blocks, hotels, concerts, extra revenue streams, Europe!! Fookin' Europe! a far cry from Newport County's delapidated Iron side ground of the 80's 4th division days.

We were competing, we were founder members of the football league, first winners at Wemberlee, back from History.

But they lied to us, they fooked it up, I wasn't sick to the stomach anymore, I'm now just angry.

They've just added their name to the long list before them. Warburton's , Hargreave's et al. Walking away rich, walking away unaffected financially, yet ruining the town, the club, the history, without a care. The laughable thing is, even 40 odd years later, the names still infect the club, even after each bust, they're still in the background

Wankers.

The Baked's are still here though & the 5th generation are now attending

So Fook 'em all

tremendous post. Merry Xmas sir!

Great post BB. Nicely expressed.

Similar story to me. Grandad at Pikes Lane, Dad at Burnden, me at Burnden & Reebok. Betrayal after betrayal by the great & the good? of the town, self elected to be custodians of our club.

But Merry Christmas - let's enjoy today.

No one at pikes lane from my lot but I'm 3rd generation who has seen us at 3 grounds burnden, Reebok and the new macron

COYFWM!

Top notch Post well said sir. ????

I feel quite sick

I feel quite sick

That's too much turkey, chocolates & booze. ;-)

Can't trace my lineage back to Pikes Lane but top post that Bowtun Baked. We have been lied to and those who have been in charge have royally fucked up big time. At every stage of fuck ups the same people on here have made excuses for the board whilst being more than eager to blame supporters for enjoying the good times. These people were paid to run the club and what a fucking mess they have made, the whole sorry saga is just getting more embarrassing with every revelation.

It is clear that there is no viable takeover on the horizon. All those that were saying administration makes no sense and will not happen, wonder if they will still spout off when the inevitable happens. I have been told (by decent sources) that even with ED wiping off the debt it is going to take around £28 million just to pay off our debts, wages, loans etc and have a going concern. Many of our so called assets have been mortgaged off and are not owned by the club, the drip drip of information supports this, car park, Lostock Training Ground, Hotel all have loans secured against them. Going into administration suddenly makes a helluva lot more sense especially as it increasingly look like we are going down anyway. This will be the next blow and when it does come I am sure it will be defended as making a lot of sense on here.

The fact is that if we want a competitive club it needs someone to finance it. Eddie Davies did that and now someone else needs to. We are reliant on external finance which means like it or not we will be a boom and bust club or at least one with varying success. Eddie put his hand in his pocket and let us enjoy huge highs. The problem is less Eddie and more that there aren't many people who want to do that. Of course it is easy to say we are in a terrible position and Eddie has to be responsible. But it is an easy postion to recover from if someone just picks up the tab from Eddie. Fact is nobody yet is willing to do that. Easy to slag people off but when Eddie came in the club were running beyond their means and he picked up the slack.

And then left staff without wages just before Christmas, and big tax bill to pay.

I'm grateful Eddie thanks trying to plan the succession of a football club is nigh on impossible but thanks for taking it on when u did and investing as much as you did for pretty much nowt and you've left us with an unbelievable infrastructure

That infrastructure might have to be dismantled though in order to keep the club alive

Be careful - if you don't refer to Davies and Gartside as the football equivalents of the Moors Murderers you'll have Snowball on your case referring to you as a namby pamby apologist. Or worse.

That infrastructure might have to be dismantled though in order to keep the club alive

Yep but it's there and it's thanks to one man hindsight again he had the bottle to stand up an up and up again for years and now gets hammered because everything's not gone to plan well I for one will appreciate what he did for our club thanks to what happened not despite it

Bolton Wanderers is for life & not just for Xmas,  & not just for all the fantastic times that ED & PG have given us....all paid for by Mr Davies.

And then left staff without wages just before Christmas, and big tax bill to pay.

Which is pretty shitty I agree. Though we live in a capitalist country and it is what happens when businesses go to the wall. What would you have Eddie do? Keeping paying everything till someone else wants to? He's had his fill. He may be wealthy still but it is unreasonable to expect financial support from him forever. Time for someone else to do it.
