Good point. I had completely forgotten about half of those loans!

I guess it's the first time most of the loans made significant contributions to get us over the line, but then bigger issue replacing them.

I just can't really blame the recruitment too much yet though as we've signed 6, on a par, if not more than most of the competition. If we don't get the 4 more needed before the end of the window then, yeah, we're done for

So long as we get Dean presumably as 1st choice, I don't mind Hardie coming as a squad player, but if Hardie is the replacement for Kenny, it's a bit worrying.

It's was i was saying earlier, we've got to take a couple gambles. Hardie coming off the bench for 30 mins, CBT also. We're not gonna get 90 mins week in week out but it's a stronger position than we're currently in and should see through to January

FWIW I'm working with a PNE fan today (went to Goodison on Saturday) and they've got 4 strikers, very unlikely to be investing in another.

I think Hardie is a savvy move to be honest. Especially seen as we'd need to fork out for Kenny and he seems to be made of glass.

Round peg in a round hole and SS knows what he's getting. And shouldn't take Hardie that long to get up to speed either seen as he's worked with him before.

The Hardie deal has certainly caught us all on the hop although of course when you look at the history why would it not have been on the cards?

He is experienced, tall and quite physical and a proven scorer and this level and League 1. Also the manager knows his strengths inside and out.

As others have identified his recent injury record is a concern but I presume he has been through a medical and Iles has said he's fit and ready to go.

Hopefully he is also a footballer hungry to prove himself again after the last 12 months he has suffered.

The Dean deal looks like it is being progressed. We need two wingers. But we also need one more central defender. I can't believe people thinking having only three main centre backs is enough, especially given SS has already said Ben Davies may not manage Saturday/Tuesday/Saturday and Forino and Toal have less than perfect injury records. Far more conerned about this than a new keeper.

The away goals is a factor for me because we have a history of not turning up in them. Especially last season, it was painful at times. The year before, as bad as it was, we did at least have McAtee and as you say Collins joining in away from home (not always of course), instead of the powder puff stuff of Burstow for eg.

Of course McAtee hasn't scored many in the last year or so, he never starts games. When he did, he was a guaranteed regular scorer/creator in L1, but he was replaced and/or injured/suspended.

Joel Randall - 6,750 L1 minutes - 29 G/A

So McAtee is ahead, but I'm not sure it's enough of a difference to call one a guaranteed scorer & creator and the other a failure at that level. I think they've both been decent L1 players in the past.

In terms of dumping everyone who isn't Championship quality, you can basically group our squad into the following...

• New signings

• Every week starters (Sheehan, Forino, Toal, RR, Dalby, Bonham)

• Work to do but signed by SS/Fergal in the past 12months (EE, Simons, Gale)

• A young back up full back and an old one (Conway & Christie)

  McAtee and Randall stand out in that they're the only players we have left that weren't signed by SS, have barely started any games under him and when they have they haven't impressed. That's why they're lumped together and IMO have similar futures here (none).

Thing is, he's not that shit. It's the lack of fucking effort that boils my piss.

All those who made the trip last Saturday deserve a bloke willing to attempt to win a ball in the opposition's box in the last minute when we're one down.

If you can't do that at a bare minimum as a player, then fuck the fuck off somewhere else.

I'm not too concerned about getting an upgrade on Bonham, although it would be nice, but as you mention the injury possibilities for CBs, its reminded me how much we are relying on Bonham not being injured. We are nackered if he does, I admit I've never seen any of the back ups play but I don't think its too much of an assumption to say they aren't ready for the championship, given they weren't proven at L1 either. At least with CB we can throw someone else in there temporarily (Christie, Famewo) and know they can handle themselves physically. I'm not sure the back up keepers can.

Lets face it we are gambling on both fronts if we leave things as they are but I'd be really keen to see just one more solid centre back brought in.

A good argument, with some logic and facts/balance - thank you.

I can't disagree McAtee and Randall are the only players left signed by EE that don't start games.

But

• Randall's goals and good games were before he came to us, he's been off form for a long time, for us and Blackpool.

• I'm not expecting McAtee to start games in the championship except in an injury/suspension crisis (ie this week!)

• You say when they have started they haven't impressed. I'll counter that and say when he's come on as sub, which has been a lot, he's impressed and if you can recall any games he came on as sub and was dire, feel free. I can name a lot of games Burstow and Forss were dire post October, maybe 1 or 2 for McAtee at most, yet he got less chances. And obviously cocked up at Plymouth which didn't help, same as Simons now who will struggle to get back in.

We're talking about one player Randall that probably won't play above L2 this season, and another that would walk into most L1 teams outside the top contenders. Can see him at a Sheff Wed when they've realised Burstow's limitations.

McAtee's issue isn't a lack of effort. He clearly puts in loads.

The issue is he's soft and hasn't got a clue how to tackle or compete for a header. Look at Saturday - he played an absolute hospital ball across our half that got intercepted. He then bust a gut to get to the opposition but once there he had no idea how to tackle and just ran at the opponent (he did actually somehow win the ball that time probably through confusion!).

As a 10 I can overlook that if he scores and created and when he gets a run in the team he has tended to do that. I'd have him in the 10 role on Saturday given current squad options (RR dropping to midfield instead of Simons).
