Actually the fought and lost FYI.

The before and after photos of Allepo make what's happening over there even more scary.

It wasn't some shitty dust bowl of a place it was a thriving and bustling city filled with people just going about their daily lives working normal jobs and going home to their families just like we do.

The Iraqi bloke I used to work with showed me some pictures of his home town and family before it kicked off over there.

So the only difference from any other family pictures from that time was the folk were a bit darker looking.

My understanding is different, I don't believe Syria was as hard line in terms of religion

 

In fact didn't the whole thing start during the Arab spring as Syrians wanted freedom and democracy just like the Western World? Bit of a conflict that they are having a civil war over freedom & democracy if 95% of them are religious fundamentalists

Really? My parents both fought the Wehrmacht and lost. Because my father was born in Upper Silesia he was given a choice whilst my mother was shipped off the Germany as forced labour.

 

The choice my father had was to be put up against a wall and shot or join the Wehrmacht under "Volksliste". Look it up.

 

He was forced to fight on the Eastern front for most of the war and near the end in Italy when him and a couple of other Polish survivors crossed over to the American lines and then were given the choice of fighting again or being POW. They chose the former.

 

Oh and 24 of their mates who were not born in Upper Silesia? They got the "head shots"

I have lived through the IRA atrocities, Baader Meinhof, Nuclei Armati Rivoluzioni etc. and things have never been this bad or this frequent.

 

Time to take the red tinged blinkers off and call it what it is. Attacks on western civilisation by extremist devotees of a stone age religion which has kept its followers in a medieval time warp for centuries. That's why they are embittered. They can see what the West has compared to the primitive existence a large proportion of them lead. The true driver behind all of this is anger rooted in overwhelming envy.

The CIA funded rebels prior to the Arab Spring uprising took place, thusly not making the Syrian conflict a Civil war but a foreign backed insurgency.

Both spellings mean the same thing.

They do in according the dictionary. But the connotations are very different. I'm not having a pop - maybe you aren't aware of them either. I only know because I noticed a lot of right wing commentators had started to choose that spelling and was interested as to why that might be. It was almost like it was being used as a pejorative.

 

Apparently to an Arabic speaker the word Muslim means a follower of Islam - where as Moslem means someone who is evil. A bit like ISIS or Daesh I suppose. There's an interesting article about it here.
