Bgoefc - I've just had a look at your links to peer reviewed research. Which one says drinking juice plus makes you lose weight?

Most of them aren't even talking about Juiceplus anyway are they? They're talking about vitamin and mineral supplementation in general and their effects on very specific physiological processes.

forgetting owt else, so far as weight loss goes, is there any difference between eating 2000 calories of fat against 2000 calories of protein or 2000 carbs

seeing as my understanding is that its about using more cals than you put in?

so as long as you use 2001, you lose weight?

Not as such - but if you eat 2000kcal as sugar - you'll just feel starving all day. You'll still lose weight providing there's a calorie deficit - whether you eat 2000kcal of pop tarts or 2000kcal of green leafy veg.

thought so, cheers

I have a personal trainer and he knows his shit and I totally agree with Gonzo.

I'm not getting to bogged down with my weight, it's my shape that will change through exercise

Back into my running now, 1-2 hours a week with my personal trainer and have dry January to help me along

Dry bum?

I have never claimed that JP on its own will make you lose weight. You are being silly now. You well know that only a  long term calorie deficit can do that.

However, "some" people find taking a juice plus shake made with  250ml skimmed milk and a handful of frozen fruit is a very appetising meal replacement. As it contains many vitamins, trace elements, minerals etc. people find it a good way say to replace their previous 500 - 700 kcal lunch with something that completely satiates them at 200 kcal and probably provides more nutrients than their previous burger or off the shelf sandwich.

As for the peer reviewed studies they show that taking supplements in this form has been proven to lead to health benefits in . Juice plus is what they describe generically as "juice concentrate" as stated in the one below for example.

I am simply trying to say that its health benefits are not complete bullshit, as I thought they were when I first came across it. In fact the majority of my wifes customers  are repeat buyers who do not actually use it for weight loss.

The last word I  will say on this is that I am astounded at the number of people who put so much faith in the nutritional advice of "the bloke who runs the gym".

Nearly all my lecturers and fellow dietitian students at Leeds Beckett attended some gym or another and we used to regularly swap tales of the ignorance passed on by these fellas as "sound advice".  These varied from such things as "carbs weight for weight make you put on lbs than protein or fat", "you can only get all essential amino acids from meat" or "it don't matter if this whey protein does not give you all your 9 essential  amino acids as the body itself does that".  :)

I bought the Mrs Joe wickes books last Christmas and still to be used, tbf looks some really good ideas in them.

I bet there isn't much tin foil left for his recipies after his made his hat?

Yes there is no substitute for a healthy balanced diet. But you are living in la la land trying to get the nation to go out and eat a balanced healthy diet. Below is the Eatwell plate that Dietitians have to promote in their work, trying to get Joe public to follow this has completely failed.

The NHS has been promoting  eating a balanced healthy diet that for the last 25 years yet as a nation we are growing more unhealthy. I am trying to say that  juice plus is supplementation plain and simple and there is definite evidence that it has helped thousands of people.

this is why stuff like juice plus is so popular

people are too lazy to actually make a concerted effort

they feel fat after christmas, want a quick fix, think they are doing some sort of detox in january on stuff like this, and lose a bit of weight

most folk won't carry it on all year as their bodies will feel deprived and they'll soon be back on the booze or whatever fatty foods they enjoy come February

then repeat the cycle next january

there's a reason why the dieting industry is worth millions

and I don't say this condescendingly, I know first hand as I (and probably all of us) have been there

I do exercise but till now it was to keep the weight off rather than tone up so I can drink beer and eat kebabs, but realizing as I get older my metabolism isn't playing that game anymore

I did cleanse 9 with the mrs last jan to see what it was like, and was nearly passing out most days, with pretty much no energy to do any exercise and generally felt rotten, lost nearly half a stone though

then put it back on

would be interested to know how many people use juice plus all year round + eat a balanced diet + do exercise V how many have it for a month or two for a quick fix, and how many are repeat buyers every 6-12 months

think thats why joe wicks is so popular, it's about knowing whats right to eat but you have to do the exercise too, and you'll have energy, feel good and lose weight

you do say your mrs does all that as well in term of good advice, but I bet most of the people who buy it don't take on her advice long term - it's no different that gonzo's PT, it's advice that you can take or leave, but it requires effort

and as you say, most people can't or won't be arsed, hence quick fixes like this are so popular

last time i did this, tea time was chicken or prawn stir fries

im a bit of a dab hand at curries these days and theres nowt bad in there, its just what to have with em

does it have to be veg or is rice ok?

I'm not getting to bogged down with my weight, it's my shape that will change through exercise

Exactly. Move away from the "sad step".

Weighing yourself is an indicator, but when your clothes start dropping off you and your moving notches on your belt, you know you are heading in the right direction.

Gym 3 times a week won't work though as MK mentioned. 5-6 times I'd suggest. And more than once a day if you can for quicker results.

Before I fucked up my achilles (well actually they were already fucked, but I ignored the pain and made them far worse), I was hammering it. Bootcamp session at 6.30am (group training is the future - the only thing that has ever worked IMO). And then driving to the office and having another 30 minutes on weights and core at the gym over the road - usually with a few minutes sprint on the treadmill to drive me into the ground. Also did boxercise class for an hour once a week.

Dropping carbs and then re-introducing them correctly has worked well for me. The Joe Wicks books have provided some great ideas - been perfect when working from home as longer to prep stuff. Very rarely have brews anymore, happy with peppermint tea, or hot water with fresh lemon. Use Purition powder (made from natural resources) and unsweetened almond milk for shakes - filler meals, etc. Eat lots of protein and vegetables. Lots of eggs for breakfast. Buy egg whites in cartons if I can. Much less fruit these days. Get my sugar rush from peanut butter or dates. 15 months ago I would hardly touch fish. Now I'm into salmon, cod, lobster, etc, etc.

Couple of quick tips and switches would be to get a decent blender and spiraliser. Making cauliflower rice as a rice substitute for curries, etc is an instant winner. As is making courgette spaghetti - substitute for pasta. Mix in chopped red onions, sun dried tomatoes, etc, etc, - easy to make.

im a bit of a dab hand at curries these days and theres nowt bad in there, its just what to have with em

see my last sentence - this is what we did. Perfect.

????????

I've read the abstract. So if you're a German healthcare professional - there is some evidence to suggest that long term supplementation might reduce your chances of moderate to severe symptoms of the common cold by as much as 20%.

It doesn't sound quite as sexy when you say it like that though.

Gym 3 times a week won't work

If you do bootcamp, which is just a bit of running with press ups, sit ups, burpees etc. then maybe. If you are lifting your own body weight then you simply aren't doing that again until your body has recovered, 2 or 3 days in my case, bring on the DOMS.

If I'm on 3 consecutive sessions, which is often the case due to pegs work, it's a push session night 1, legs night 2 then pull night 3.

Half an hour cardio at the end of each. Road running when I can.

Take a gram of whizz every day. Nailed on weight loss.

Are folk wanting to get fit and lose weight heading to the gym to lift their own bodyweight though? I doubt. Hitting the gym to use a treadmill and a few other exercises before thinking that's enough and heading home ain't going to make too much difference.

Agreed that doing a bit and early darting is no use, but three intensive sessions a week can still work wonders IMO.

Agreed - but once you have hit a decent level of fitness and body weight.

For those wanting a kick-start, I would definitely recommend 20 min of HIIT with a warm-up and stretch-off 5 times a week. And then a jog or something else at the weekend for 30-45 mins. No reason why folk can't do this from home either. Kettle bells are becoming less expensive now (Quality Save had 12kg for about £10 the other day). And skipping ropes cost next to nowt at Sports Direct if jogging ain't your thing.

Come on then - let's put our money where our mouths are.

I'm 80kg

23.5% bodyfat.

By the end of 2017 I aim to be 76kg 21. 5% bodyfat.

Post your goals on here and let's see how we get on! :-)

Just had a home made chicken curry with cauliflower/red onion

Took about 40 minutes from starting prep to eaten

The cauliflower isn't a bad option at all

You have to whisper this

But veg curries are far superior to any with meat in.
