Mounts.

I'm an outer.

We won't get tariff free trade, without accepting free movement. Which we won't.

Because if we do, every Eastern European, every Southern European member of the Eu will want out on the same terms

Eastern and Southern Europe wont want out as they are net takers from the Union so that point is not relevant, lets wait and see on tariff free trade until its all played out then we can all re-visit this and see who was right and who was wrong.

I see the Pound is begining to climb against the euro and dollar, what a suprise, once we vote out it will go through the roof as the Euro wil then be a dead duck.

I'm also sure it was either Maggie or Mounts who suggested we held all the cards.

First reference I could find using the search to holding all the cards was Sweep a phrase he seems to like to use quite often.

Hang on a minute. This was a post from Casino. Any advance on that?

The search I did shows that you were the instigator. This Maggie did it is just fake news. :)

Article 50 is a totally untried procedure devised for a hypothetical situation.

Anyone making club rules would not have contemplated a period longer than 12 months to terminate membership.

So 2 years was inserted here because it was manifestly obvious than a 12 month completion was almost certainly unachievable, as the experience with Greenland leaving Denmark (and thereby the EU) had proved.

To extend the period beyond 2 years requires the agreement of all the national parliaments. It is quite feasible that one of Austria / Hungary / Czech Republic (/Malta) will vote it down.

The only way to prepare for this possibility, which will come very suddenly and very late, is to have full preparation for leaving without a trade agreement and therefore falling back onto WTO rules. The EU should be told that, unless there is real progress on trade talks this year, the whole of the (as yet undefined) cost of preparing for a failure to agree will be deducted from our goodwill out payment.

[since Germany may well still have a caretaker government at the end of the year this would prove interesting.]

This afternoon's Treasury Select Committee hearing is very interesting. It is over 2 hours so far ( and will be available to watch on parliamentlive.tv).

I think I read that you can go to WTO and continue to have same agreement as current deal through a transitional period or did I dream that?

That's a definite maybe - or maybe not.

If we are granted rights to negotiate our own deals while still having the benefit of EU terms through a transitional period, then yes.

But why would they agree to that?

maggie on 4/9/16 @ 11.16

I fail to see how this is difficult to understand. We trigger Article 50 in the new year or thereabouts, and then it takes ages to get out. None of that means she is trying to find a way to stay half in half out. In the meantime we can have preliminary negotiations with any country we like even if we cannot negotiate with the EU as a whole.  We are not going to pursue the Norwegian or Swiss model. We are going to pursue the British one.  We have all the cards.  We will get more or less whatever we want out of the whole thing.

Just read the above...

"We hold all the cards" was coined by Maggie....he also said negotiations shouldn't take more than 2 weeks

Anyway, I liked it when he used to post, I rarely agreed with him, but most of his stuff was reasonably well thought out

Horwich/Leigh Mafia, one out, all out.

No Balls has officially moved beyond the borders of Bolton so shouldn’t be allowed back anyway. She can be spotted at Booths most evenings buying lavender dog shampoo and sushi.

Maggie is in the hands of ISIS but they’ll send him back eventually when they lose the argument he’ll have started.

Surely a little tin pot country like Malta couldn’t veto such a big transition deal like that? Especially as they don’t have any sovereignty and they get told what to do by the EU

Yet another example that kicks the whole sovereignty argument well into touch

Sovereignty is the full right and power of a governing body over itself, without any interference from outside sources or bodies. Malta abides by the rules set by the ECJ so Malta is not a Sovereign nation. That it can veto the Brexit deal has nothing whatsoever to do with sovereignty
