Yes the travel industry is suffering. And I feel sorry for everyone impacted. But I cannot see what the government are doing wrong here? They are petrified of a second wave.

let’s put this out there. If we crack on and just allow travel etc and we get a second wave of the same size as the first one. There will be no furlough support. Millions of folk will lose their jobs and homes probably. What does that do to the travel industry then??

Apologies Mounts, I was sure you’d voted for the Tories last time out.

Well I hope folk having to wear masks doesn’t affect your holiday too much

Won’t worry me in the slightest, nor will social distancing as it’ll be nice and quiet in the swimming pool. That’s if I get there of course.

We have to start to take calculated risks to keep the economy ticking over, its going to be the new normal, spikes should be clamped on immediately but travel should continue to low infection areas as long as all necessary precautions are taken.

In one.

Shit for those involved but to use a popular quote on here - Short term pain....Long term gain.

Suck it up.

I get that pal and have been championing that for some time. The fact that they feel the need to do this makes me think that this is the thing that worries them massively.

We cannot continue to lockdown, furlough and trash the economy, I cannot see an alternative option.

We aren’t going to continue furlough that’s my point.

That’s why this is actually probably sensible what they are doing. If we take this risk and it backfires then genuinely a second wave cripples our country and causes huge long term damage.

I get it’s a bit shit and it’s really hard on those working in the industry but they must feel it’s necessary

There’s an interesting video of German doctors around

I agree, the Government is quite rightly scared of a second wave, as financially the cupboard is pretty bare now. No way could we afford to start the furlough scheme again. Hopefully we won't get a second wave, and as Mounts says, if there are little outbreaks, then we do regional lock downs to keep it contained. The Government have pretty much done a piss poor job on the first wave, if there is to be a second wave, you would hope they've learnt their lesson and can handle it all a bit better, by locking down sooner and harder (by region/town/city, not nationally)

As a slight aside, I'm sure they just said on the radio that Sweden now has the highest amount of cases per million people than any other country in Europe  -  which I think goes to show them deciding to just ignore it and not lockdown at all probably isn't the best model going forward

The Swedes are a very pragmatic lot, they did generally social distance, work from home if possible, etc off their own back anyway. Can you imagine if we did the same in this country? We would be like Brazil.

I don’t see how you can end furlough whilst keeping restrictions in place

Example - not allowed to open a night club but no Furlough for someone who works in one?

This vaccine isn’t coming any time soon, I don’t see any other way through this virus than letting it run it’s course. Lock down the at risk groups, give everyone a flu jab to soften the usual winter rush then see what happens, fingers crossed the increased capacity in the NHS can cope.

I just don’t see how we can afford it pal. Up here for instance for hotels they’ve launched some form of grant funding for them. I think it will be in the form of repayable grants but that isn’t going to solve the problem. If folk can’t work due to second spike and theres no work then they are going to get punted.

anyway this is the holiday thread.

@Traf what’s the resort like where you are? Is everything open?

I'm sure they said the other day there is nowhere near enough vaccine to give more than about 20% of the population a flu jab

Its not happening

Unless somebody has ordered millions of flu jabs from

A) corner shop

B) furniture shop

C) ferry co with no ferries

D) a shop run by a russian woman who may have once played tennis with a tory mp

And as for the jabs, we dont have the staff to give them

Maybe we can train the track and trace types up

Got a decision to make. Up to now I've canx all the leave I have booked off this year. Ive got 2 weeks leave coming my way in August and I have already canx my holiday for that time. I've been told that, if I want, I can carry all my annual leave over in to next year because of the C19 interference. Massive chunk of leave next year if I do. I'm tempted, but only because I can see the quality of the time off work, while this pandemic is still around, will be effected. But there's  no guarantee next year will be much better. Anyway, if I go ahead with it there's a good chance I might die of exhaustion before I get to use them.

Lucky you, we have been told we can take over 5 days to next year. Only we can always take over 5 days to the next year so it is bollocks. I appreciate many can't take any over so it is better than nowt.

I have decided to take them anyway, frankly this year has been a right cunt on many fronts and a bit of time out now and again is needed.

I thought they only create the winter flu jab in our summer and it’s based on the prominent flu viruses from the Southern Hemispheres winter flu season

Anyway, If we can’t roll out a flu jab to the whole country then we have got fuck all chance of rolling out a Covid jab either

Begs the question, why are we waiting for a vaccine if we haven’t got the ability to roll it out? Herd immunity would be the only option in that case

Roll it out to the elderly and those with underlying conditions if there's enough resources to sort most of them out

The rest of us can isolate
