Warrington.

So built up in the surrounds, and yet the the town centre is worse than Bolton.

They were a game away from promotion to the National League North last season after finishing third, but got beat in the play off by Kings Lynn.

Kicked off big time after the game.

“Super Play Off”, no less.

Bizarre place really. Orford and the like are absolute dives, but we drove in via Grappenhall and Stockton Heath today and there’s some serious money around there.

South of the ship canal was known as "the Cheshire side of town" when I was at school. Of course that border disappeared when the town itself was transferred to Cheshire.

Before the ship canal the border was the river between Warrington on the north bank and Latchford on the south. Latchford Within then became that part between the river and canal, and Latchford Without the part south of the canal, subsequently absorbed into Grappenhall.

Some of the Orford estate is built on part of the former RAF Padgate

Bought my first house and lived in Warrington for 3 years in the mid to late 80’s. Started in Latchford then moved to Birchwood

Used to be a decent place. Friday night in the older boozers round Golden Square and then Saturday night in Mr Smiths. Enjoyed my time there. No idea what it’s like these days

I worked at Birchwood a few years back. Even then the locals called it awful Orford.

I know of at least 3 PhDs from Orford, and that's just from my school group and the athletic club.

Mr Smiths...now there was a classy place :D Loads of fun mind

Stockton Heath was an odd Night out. Full of Roisin head lads and orange women. Viper Lounge, Tom’s / 101’s and all that

Mr Smiths when the “spaceship” used to descend from the ceiling (about 87/88 time) and “select” a girl from the dance floor to go back up. Fuck me it all seems a bit creepy now

Stockton Heath was nothing when I was there so guessing that was later than 89 when I headed back to Bolton and bought a house in Smithills

80’s was a bit before my going out days :D

Mississippi Showboat

I was something like 23 when I went and every woman in there was at least twice my age

Great night

Warrington pre M6 was something special for traffic. It once took me 40 minutes to cross Kingsway.

And incidents in the canal caused issues as the bridges were more up than down as the shipping backlog cleared. There was a collision which led to a sandboat sinking, leading to a 3 week closure. And another time a lorry crashed through the bridge gates in to the canal at 2am., the driver being asleep.

Warrington town centre is a shit hole these days and it kicks off every weekend guaranteed. Palmyra Square further along is great for a drink and something to eat, two worlds apart.

Lymm, Stockton Heath, Grappenhall, Appleton & Culcheth are highly desirable places to live and they don't come cheap.

Only connection with Warrington was visiting with my mam to see her cousin who lived in Longford and the house having a flat top roof.

Ha. The Latchford Swing Bridge was the bane of my life. I lived only a mile or so from it but the number of boats that crashed into it and shut the whole area down

Really? Palmyra Square was nothing when I lived there (albeit over 30 years ago now)

It was a piece of grass surrounded by a few doctors surgeries, a chemist, some shitty offices and a derelict venue place - Parr Hall?? Arse end of town with nowt for it other than being near the train station

Palmyra Square was a little park surrounded by solicitors offices in the 90s, but it was still part of the town centre.

It's now the posh part of the town centre.

I like Warrington, and I've got more reason than most not to.

The nation's most central location!

Parr Hall, saw loads of bands there

Is it still open?

Most deluded football club I’ve ever encountered. I still can’t get my head around it.

I had a pub in Warrington TC for a while in the early 90's.

The Showboat was indeed a dive, think it used to be £15 to get in, but free drinks once and Smiths had some great dance nights on, saw some decent acts there. Sure I saw the Prodigy there.

Still open, although it seems to be mainly comedians and tribute bands looking at their website. I went to a Clone Roses/Smiths Unlimited/Noasis gig there after the Port Vale game the last time we were in League One. They had The Proclaimers on a few months ago though.

Used to work in Great Sankey, seemed very leafy and "nice",

Would happily work back in that area.

Are you not thinking of Oxford, not Orford.
