”Aggressive” new variant has landed in Moscow. Makes people, even those that have been vaccinated, more poorly than previous types.

Time for Uncle Joe to push the button? Short term pain.

Few pubs near Wembley asking for proof of vaccinations last week, some doormen just loved the power it’s creating jobsworths 

Surely any vax passport will include an allowance for those medically unable to have the jab.

I'm all for anything that gets us out of this and back to something close to normal

You would think so, but it would have to be a proper medical certificate saying why you can't have the jab, as opposed to people just self certifying like they seem to at the minute

As a country, we need to start moving forward, and we shouldn't be restricting or holding back those that can enable us to start that progression, even if it is only part of the population. Each day more and more people become less likely to contract and die of COVID (well, the current variants anyway) we can't hide away forever. Keep those who haven't been vaccinated "safe/shielded" and let everybody else crack on, surely you can't be arguing against that?

As for the highlighted part, I'll be fucked if I know what you're talking about, how do you think I, as much as anyone, will pay the price? - I'd be interested to know your theory there, unless of course you're just chucking fancy phrases about to try and sound clever.

Can you not see that you are so willing & grateful to get back freedoms that were actually yours in the first place that you will accept passports & whatever else they bring up next just so you can go for a pint? If this virus  is so dangerous why was there no social distancing & masks at G7, apart from photo shoots? Football crowds are limited but Wimbledon fortnight isnt facing the same protocols? I could go on with the contradictions we are being fed. 

    Isn't it funny that it's the average Joe in the street who's expected to follow these guidelines but those with money & influence seem to be unaffected & unafraid of the consequences?

I agree there are contradictions, of course there are those with a bit of wealth and power will always do as they please, they always have and always will.....there is no changing that unless you fancy starting a bit of a revolution. I'll admit, like most of the people in the UK I'm not the sort of person who is likely to go on a march, as I'm not really that arsed if things stay as they are to be honest, I'll just go "meh" when they extend again. 

The only reason I think a vaccine passport is a good idea, is that it'll speed things up a bit. It will also likely ensure that those who refuse to have the vaccine aren't anywhere near me on a night out, and that's certainly a good thing

Regarding Wimbledon, as I'm going for two days, I'm happy they're a bit more open 🙂 - anyway, they're actually limited to only 50% for most of the fortnight, it's only the finals that are 100%

I don’t think its the issue of how many require hospital treatment, but more of how many of the 89 could be carrying a variant.

I suspect Boris is more than comfortable with people picking up the Covid strains we have now. It’s the new variants that are the threat from overseas.

I don’t buy into locking down for fear of variants, if that’s now going to be the rule that governs whether we open up or not then we can never open back up. Also flu has variants each year and we manage with this year after year, yes some years more die but it’s never led to locking down.

That's exactly going to be the rule for as long as those in charge feel they can get away with it I'm afraid.

And there you have it. If people are prepared to accept any rules & regulations made up on a whim just so they are allowed to have a few basic human rights returned then they are on a slippery slope. It has been shown in the past that our freedoms must be fought for at all costs or the results are catastrophic.

The country has become reliant on cheap labour, and inevitably folk find work in other things. Becomes a circle.

We're now short of workers in all manner of areas, and have been since before brexit.

Its actually a recognised fundamental of an advanced society that much of a nation's employment is within the service sector.

This is now believed to be slowly changing, without doubt in part to climate and population pressures.

Fortunately those in power now seem to be recognising this, and an emphasis going back into non academic routes. Not everyone can get a degree and a good graduate job, nor be expected to. 

However, along as kids are funnelled through that route, things won't change. We've got Robert Halfon talking repeatedly about poor kids not doing well in school, increasing levels of poor literacy and numeracy, yet more and more graduates. Doesn't stack up.

Manual work, for a decent wage should not be regarded as second class, and hopefully things are starting to change, especially given the good money now being made in trades of all kinds for example.

 

Sorry about the delay in responding as I've been out At Work all day... I am approaching 65 and have that ethic set in my DNA.

I have been part time teaching in several FE Colleges for the past 20 yrs or so on an "on and off" basis. When I used to discuss the matter with the old hands who have now either retired or moved on, they used to tell me the schools were not producing the raw material anymore and they (we) had to start at a lower base line involving teaching Maths and English basic skills. In the 70's these guys wouldn't have got into Further Education but now it is their "right".

I totally agree with your statement that a manual skill should not be seen as second class, it should be nurtured but since the Blair government a "university" education has almost become a right irrespective of ability and desire.

I also recall Jack Gormley telling Ted Heath that he would not rest until every miner had a Jag in his drive... maybe that was where it all began.

It does to people who are terrified of needles but there are many with other medical issues.... The vaccination levels aren't holding anyone back, the Government are doing that.
