Is comparing countries acceptable again?

Fwiw, i cant see padraig and saoirse living on a farm an hour from the nearest electric caring one jot for a vaccine

The person who compared it was trying to show the uk in. A bad light. Same as all you lot who have thrown in comparisons. Really should read the threads before commenting 👍🏼

He just doesn't get it. 😁

Fwiw, it's good news that Europe is improving its numbers now. Lots of talk of hesitancy initially but hopefully that will drop off as the benefits come to the fore.

Still can't understand the EU not ordering any more AZ stuff, as that's going to slow them down.

It's you Boris haters that are doing the comparisons, and getting it wrong.

Interesting how many vaccines this nation is giving away to poorer countries, not really mentioned by the same individuals. Wonder why?

Bottom line is this

Travelling about is just asking for a variant to emerge that may evade vaccines.

We’re in great shape here, come September I think we’ll be properly immunised as a nation and fully open.

Full foreign travel will just have to wait. It’s shite, but not worth the risk of undoing all the graft we’ve put in.

Our economy needs it anyway, there’s a food shortage on the horizon because we suddenly have a massive gap of fruit pickers and cheap Labour.

Agree that we have to get our own country sorted first before worrying about travel too much.

The food picking issue is an interesting one: an inevitable rebalancing on the way, it wasn't that long ago that seasonal work was commonplace amongst the young, especially students.

Not seen as fashionable now, but I'm sure that will change. Growers, processors and supermarkets have had it good for a while with cheaper labour. They will have to improve the appeal of the work now, better advertising of what's available, and salary.

Yes.

Cant wait until I’m paying £4 for an apple because a load of woke wanky teenagers need £10 an hour to shake the trees.

You should check the jobs market- that's a typical salary currently. Not necessarily worse than working in a boozer etc. Just not fashionable.

Did you notice particularly high fruit and veg prices prior to the influx of cheap labour from Romania etc?

It's a myth that prices would sky rocket, maybe a slight increase, but that's fair enough if we are paying workers a touch more.

Oh, and trees are often shaken by machines.

The British public don't like to pay higher prices, so I think we're more likely to fuck our farmers and "home grown" off, and start doing some trade deals that allow us to import much cheaper stuff from other parts of the world

Indeed.

Weve just signed a trade deal with the Aussies that allows us to import cheap stuff.

Our farmers can grow TVR’s

Moving forward, we will still allow cheap labour in, even that tit who owns Wetherspoons is calling for the Government to allow some form of visa for cheap labour, as he's realised he can't get sufficient bar staff for his pikey pubs, as "local" people won't work for the pittance that he offers

End of this month we will be subject to the off loading of cheap steel imports. USA and EU are keeping their restrictions in place but we are coming out of the EU and doing "global" deals... Goodbye to another industry, at least TVRs are plastic pigs

Labour supply is becoming a premium in building.

No new EU workers coming in and the existing will be going home in summer as usual to holiday. Won't be able to come back in and probably won't bother.

If they can’t come back in then that’s because they’ve not applied to stay. Who’s fault is that?

I don’t think many people actually realise that prices are going to rise on most items at rates we’ve never seen before.

we import too much.

It's obviously their fault, but that doesn't help with short term labour shortages. We'll get through it I'm sure, so I'm not actually all that arsed, and if things go up a bit in price, then again, I'm not overly that arsed to be honest.

kearsley medical Centre are one of the ones taking the mickey... doing as little as possible.

Changed doctors and the new one in L/L seems decent but am yet to meet them.

I could do a book with the fuck ups from doctors over the last 12 months.

Spring view? Had a full blown argument with one of those GPs the other week as I refused to take a picture on my personal phone of a patients wounds and send them to her because she didn't want to come out. They love me 😂

It doesn’t help agreed and it’s all a bit of a mess. And likewise I’m not that arsed if stuff increases a bit in price. It will balance out in the end.

But for someone to try and imply it’s anything but their own choice is a bit fucking silly really I think you will agree.

My problem is that I cannot rely on British workers. I cannot fault the work ethic from European tradespeople.

I'm quite pessimistic about it all at the moment, I'm now turning summer work away because I cannot guarantee the labour.

Also there are going to be quite a lot of redundancies in the steel industry and the like, everyone is banging on about sausage wars when it actually goes much further.

Certainly with regards to fruit and veg being picked, it goes beyond the just the fairly low wage, foreign types are happy to come over to Lincolnshire and the such like and live in a caravan or shitty digs for the summer doing these sorts jobs, I'm not sure you'll get much of the UK population moving out of their current homes to go and do seasonal work in the regions that grow our produce for a few months

I'm talking about bricklayers, joiners and plasterers.

Paying up to £250 per day at the moment and am still short.

Don't get me started on plumbers and sparkies

Therell just need to be apprenticeships

Construction and folk who can find where we left the border technology

You cannot import certain soft fruits at the price and quality grown locally.

Other stuff won't be any cheaper, particularly when transport costs are added. In fact a lot of fresh produce is more expensive over there than here.

The meat discussion is also not particularly accurate- 5 or 15 years initial protection. A chap from the Australian producers reckons they will be producing stuff for the high end market, climate change fucking over that place, and beef consumption dropping here.

Many issues to be grappled with by farmers beforehand.

Apprenticeships won't solve the immediate need, takes 3-4 years to get a trade and then they'll be pretty green. Most British youngsters don't want them anyway, just want to be You Tube Influencers and get an immediate life style. Aspirational-ism will be our downfall.
