But a year ago this week we had the "embarrassment" of losing at home to Iceland. But it was a friendly, and the fans and players didn't really care. Same tonight, surely nobody will remember this result next week. And we were about 1 second from going home from the Euros in disgrace after the 1-1 v Denmark, 0-0 v Slovenia and 1-0 down to Slovakia in injury time. Let's not pretend we were much better a year ago. As per usual, the excitable types are going off way too early. I'll wait and see. Far too early to judge anything. Meaningless friendlies when the players should be on a beach with their feet up are not to be used as a measuring stick. Won't stop numpties dong it though.

Others can probably provide better examples but Chelsea's Champions League win in 2021 is probably one. Hmmm I'm struggling to think of a time in my lifetime watching it (since 94) that the best team hasn't won the world cup. People may have their personal but there's no clear cut underdog wins. Euros is a little bit different for some reason (Greece win, England making the final last year despite being abysmal). Anyone pining for Southgate needs to remember we were going backwards, and equally had disinterested friendly losses.

It was like the second half of Evatt's play off final defeat season. It had already gone stale but finished in a respectable position due to previous good work. I imagine if Southgate had carried on it would have been like this last season. The rot had set in. Going backwards for me because we looked further from winning something than we had at euro 2021.
June 11, 20251 yr El Hadji Diouf has spoken ... "England are a very good side and very good players. But in Nottingham I did not see a very good England team, they did not work together. I saw good players but there was no teamwork. It's the first time in a long time that I have seen an England side play as bad as that." Edited June 11, 20251 yr by Dr. Feelgood

Dioufy, you weren’t the only one who noticed that and sadly I have no confidence with this guy in charge of it changing. Just yet another sideways and backwards disciple who will waste the talent we’ve clearly got.

Let's not pretend we were much better a year ago. That's the context I was chatting about with a mate (yes, I've got one) after the game. Iceland loss was a similar one, we also had that drubbing at home by Hungary in 2022. You're certainly right about the Euros, we stumbled into them and through them, only Bellingham's rabbit out of hat moment saved it from being a shambles. Because we got to a final though, it's left whoever came in after Southgate with the challenge of 'any less than another final and you've taken us backwards'. This squad of players, as a group playing together (forget what they do in their clubs), isn't as good as the media like to make out. It's overstuffed with the same types who want to play in the same areas and sub standard in others. It does look a bit of a concern though under Tuchel that there doesn't look to be much in the way of harmony between him and the squad

June 11, 20251 yr It was so obvious we would lose last night. Senegal are a really good team, and that England B team is pants, and never played together. This manager won't last long at all, terrible fit, and all his team and squad selections have been beyond shocking. He watches match of the day, and picks based on that and his biased Chelsea link & the big TV games - i'm convinced, he is piss poor. Edited June 11, 20251 yr by Pablo
June 11, 20251 yr Littleraly had 2 good games under Venables. Holland and Scotland. Switzerland was a shit. So was the Spain game and he should've changed his attack v the Germans.
