Ballance is Zimbabwean

Vaughan would have been 35. Comments made in 2009.

Has any non minority come out and backed Rafiqs case ?

Not a case of young dickheads trying to be funny and controversial? Just like most sets of lads in that age bracket?

The dressing rooms in sunday league were fuckin brutal, even more so were building sites when I was a lad. Doenst make it right, it's all wrong but was this him being singled out or were they all at it with eachother?

Definitely an element to that. The senior players probably should have behaved better but I reckon this has gone on for years. Sledging used to be part of the game I assume that went too far at times.
It’s about defining what’s inappropriate comments and what’s racist comments.

This is my take on it.

There’s inappropriate behaviour and racist behaviour and there’s always that grey area of crossing between the two so that’s what needs to be determined.

However.

Using only fools as an example there was language in there that you wouldn’t or perhaps shouldn’t use now, times change very quickly, so I think historic comments need to take on board mitigating circumstances.

If a player or a person believes they were the subject of racist or inappropriate behaviour then they should always be listened to.

Yorkshire have been very very poor and they need to look at their PR team at the handling of this.

Yorkshire CC should have taken the comments on board, listened , apologised , addressed with a reform plan and committed to learning and moving forward.

Vaughan went on the defensive looking out from himself, Yorkshire have made mistakes.

I’m suing the Bolton Cricket Association.

Years back, an Aussie pro spent an entire game calling me and a couple of others Paleface Pommie Bastards , a clearly disparaging racist term.

Whilst I suspect Rafeeq suffered beyond the boundary rope, there needs to be a very honest conversation about the difference between racist baiting and nation-based and harmless ribbing.

Because very soon, calling someone a Scottish bastard when they are in fact both Scottish and a bastard, will become a hate crime.

Throw in Welsh, Irish, French etc etc.

Then its Mancs, Scousers, cockneys, geordies all claiming race hate.

I fully understand that this is a fine line to walk, but it’s actually really fucking important.

Its CRICKET for fucks sake. Extreme and blatant racism is to be dealt with as harshly as possible.

Nation based teasing and sledging is harmless.

Careful , now.

It’s all about context. It always is.

Yorkshire are unique in so much as up until 1992, they insisted that only players born in Yorkshire, could play for the County team. The rule was modified to include players educated in the County. This, ironically, involved Michael Vaughan. He was born in Eccles. He has, however, always portrayed himself as a proud Yorkshireman. Taken in context and context is always quoted in defence, it could explain his remarks. (If he actually said them) If there were 3 Lancastrian’s at the club and he said the same thing to them, no one would have complained.
He could of course have been referring to their colour. Then it’s a racist remark.

Everyone is entitled to a defence. We could of course just stab him with the pitch fork. It was an opinion based on the culture of our country. We still do have a culture, don’t we.

The prosecution has made their case. I’ve said before, it’s up to Vaughan to make his defence.

Not sure why you quoted me?

I’m guessing you were laughing at my remark rather than Rudy’s or Gonzo. I may be wrong, if so, apologies.

No problem, my laughter was at Gonzo's comment to Rudy.

Maybe I need educating. But there's racism and there's racism. One would call you a N or P. And the other would say something and be totally unaware of the effect.  Let's take Michael Vaughan as an example. He may have said "you lot" once and in a light hearted manner not even thinking it might cause offence. But if you are on the receiving end of that comment you might have been on the back end of a dozen "light hearted" comments from different people that week. Comments like that would really grind at you over lifetime. This is a society problem. We have all been guilty of it.
