If it’s the number of beggars with a cardboard sign stating, “Homeless ex-soldier” then I’d wonder if that’s just the extra sympathy-hook they’ve used to eke out a bit of income and the closest they ever got to armed forces was wishing they’d signed up at 16.

Unless they’re a career soldier, signing up to do 20+ years, I’m not sure how much of a future they’d be looked after for. 
RW will undoubtedly know more about it but if someone joined the armed forces and then does a minimum term (3.5 - 6 years depending on which of the forces you joined according to https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/careers-advice/careers-in-the-armed-forces#:~:text=You'll have to commit,forces you want to join.)

Someone joining REME or Logistics or a similar unit does an apprenticeship but a soldier in an infantry unit may not actually learn any transferable skills for out in civvy street.

Just remembering is enough. Buy a poppy from an RBL approved outlet, bow your head in silent deference for a moment around 11am and otherwise crack on.

Those who gave their lives did so in the hope that we could just crack on as normal.

Poor mental health, ptsd etc. Difficulty in returning to normal civilian life.

I don't think the situation is as bad as its painted in some quarters, that said those with such difficulties could always do with improved, longer term care.

Whilst LW's comment was coarse, fundamentally there is an issue- we spend so much externally whilst our own seem to suffer. Which is a shame, as every soldier has a range of transferable skills, even the lowest ranked, and if helped better they could go on to contribute to the wellbeing of the country.
