However, Biden has brought calmness and diplomacy (and loads of jobs) out of a chaotic, nasty and infantile presidency that preceded him. 😁

June 4, 20224 yr I'm all for history and pageantry, it's a strength to have tradition, but I have to say after she goes I'd be very happy for us to make that next step change to a Republic and this week has really solidified that for me personally. Time to move on for us all, stop looking backwards at the ideas of commonwealth and what being British meant to a new nation that looks forward to what in means to be part of this country now. It's only my view though and it'll never happen in my lifetime.

Quite easy to chuck such comments about, especially from you. As it happens, even if he did shag a 17 year old, you're right, it doesnt compare to killing folk.

It's only my view though and it'll never happen in my lifetime. A benign, constitutional monarchy that knows what its role is suits me down to the ground. I think it's good to have a purely ceremonial figure representing tradition and public service but who sits above politics. We might not get that from a Republic or from a President.
June 4, 20224 yr There was the one little flag up in our street. Even the pretend Rangers fan didn't bother,

It's only my view though and it'll never happen in my lifetime. I can see both sides. We’ve been pretty fortunate to have a Queen who has understood the role and executed her duty to perfection. Charlie will be much the same I expect. The point of the monarchy is that it represents Britain. Look at Brexit - that has made “us Brits” take a very long hard look at what we define as “being British”. The fallout is that we are all proud to define ourselves as British, but that means different things to many of us. The monarchy has remained completely agnostic on Brexit and that in itself is a very British characteristic - minding one’s own business. And I know they have to, but still… Either way, the Queen always gets my complete respect not least for the fact that she’s worked 30 past retirement when she could easily have chosen not to. Bottom line, I’d rather have a monarchy, it does no harm and without it we’re just an island full of belligerent dickheads who like tea and lager.
