The Cost Of Living Crisis

Anyone felt the pinch yet?

Notice a good proportion of my hotels are quiet this week. But with the jubilee round the corner and pride the week after maybe folk are simply saving their trips for that.

Cant help but feel the media are driving a lot of it. They seem hell bent on us heading into a recession. Making people panic and stop spending.

They should be telling everyone its all gravy.

Only area Ive felt it is diesel. £154 to fill my van the other day. That's taking the piss.

That's what I don't understand- if you're doing the miles required to do the job, then why should the rate drop after a given number?

Aye, no idea why it's in place but it's been there everywhere I work.  I've never been close to it in the past so it's never mattered but I might be having a difficult conversation in the not too distant future.

I would assume its as a contribution to wear and tear etc, and after a while it's felt that plenty has been contributed to that.

Bit weird though, as you'd expect the rate to be be constant so the more you use it, the more you get towards wear and tear.

Strangely, at the wife's place, the rate for electric vehicles is a "bicycle rate" or something and is considerably lower. OK fuel is less, but it doesn't contribute to the rest the like it does for ice vehicles.

We're 45p per mile for the first 10K, then 25p per mile after that.

I drove back from Wetherby today (154 miles), I purposely didn't boot it, just to see what MPG I could get, and it was 69.2MPG by the time I got home, which was pretty decent, as usually I'm only getting around 50MPG as an average.

A BMW 320D, that was all in economy mode of course

I keep forgetting to put my passat into economy mode on long journeys.  For a big estate it is good on fuel but I don't think I would get near those figures.

Our previous passage estate did 50mpg in normal mode.

Current one does about 45.

Ive got one of these Eco buttons in my van. Is it for long journey stuff then?

Just pressed it in mine. Reduces the acceleration capability, the heating function etc. All to conserve energy.

I put normal back on after a minute.

Got a new car (for me) recently with an eco dial. Certainly makes you drive more efficiently. Long drives on the motorway are the most efficient if you do a steady 55. (Not for everyone but I have plenty of time these days) Short journeys, don't accelerate too quickly and use the gears as directed. Can be a distraction at first but you soon get used to it. I even get a rewarding ‘e’ when I drive it at its most economical level. 😊

Mileage at our place was pretty decent at 45p a mile.  No sooner was I given areas further afield to cover, the bloody fuel prices shot up.  You can still make on it but it's a helluva lot less.

We have a limit too, around 8500 miles I think, where the rate drops to about 15p or sommat. No feckin way will I be using my car if that happens.

You can claim tax relief on the  difference between 45p and whatever allowance you get for your total mileage. ( along with any other expenses)
I only get 14p a mile from the start but claim on the rest .
I look at it as a way of saving , usually get around a grand back in summer.

you can also claim retrospectively for other years .
think it’s only valid if using your own car.
apologies if teaching you how to suck eggs and you know this but just in case there’s some who don’t .

Brilliant that Sweep. I don’t hammer my car but I’ve tried recently to be softer on the throttle. I accelerate slowly and keep revs under 2k in each gear and I stick to no more than 65 on motorways. Haven’t seen any real effect yet but it must be helping and to be fair it’s forced me to realise I should do this all the time now.

It’s probably of not relevance to most on here but in the early 70’s the price of petrol shot up due to conflicts in the Middle East. I remember the price increasing from 30p to 35p a GALLON in a week.  Instead of filling up my Lambretta, I limited it to just 25p. Times were hard.

Read up on hypermiling techniques.

Easy on the brakes, try to look further ahead so you can ease off the gas and coast up to lights etc.

Went picking summat up from the GPO near Warbys the other week and noticed all the POD point chargers on the employees only side. Was talking to the postie who delivers parcels at work and he said he's gone all electric and it's a complete fucking nightmare because he gets 85 miles per full charge on his van.
