yeah, I struggle to get past the first chapters to be honest

"god made everything there is in a week"

and

"jesus is the son of god born of an immaculate conception"

I understand the love thy neighbour and be excellent to each other messages, I can see they that is acceptable to the masses, whichever version you choose to go with be it christanity, islam etc

just can't really undestand anymore why the original stories they came up with are still accepted as is

though suspect that will continue to change generation by generation

They're not just accepted, that's what theologian's do- try and understand the written word. Its not supposed a literal reading - although some do take it as such.

Its the reason we dont stone those people who lay with men anymore. Its how adaptive a religion is to the needs of its society and how it helps shape it as well. Christianity has proved remarkably adaptable over millennia and with a thousand different interpretations from the Latter Day Saints to modern Anglicanism. That's why religion can also be a personal journey of spiritual faith rather than the just the reading of a text. Its why many religious people - those in the church - do go through crisis of faith. Its a lot to give over of yourself to as well as a comfort to be found within of having something with endless love for you despite every flaw we carry with us a fallible humans.

Personally I find it endlessly fascinating

I was brought up that way - roman catholic - parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, all into it to varying degrees

I just can't subscribe to it anymore

I used to work with a lad, he was part of some new age church, big into jesus and all that

his parents were big into it, his wife was, her parents were

so there kids were too

he has basically spent the entirity of this life preparing for the next life and what awaits him there, believing it would be better than this one

he was giving something like 50% of his wage to this church as was everyone else in it

putting all their eggs in this heavenly promise of a basket

(it was later believed the leader of it was spending some of the money on ladies of the night)

what was funny though - one side of his life was rooted entirely in faith, while the other was devoted to coding — he was a total programming nerd,  based entirely on logic and technology

such a paradox of a man

Well yes that's the issue - humans are fallible.

Its mainly the people who subscribe to the i dont believe in god so im intellectually superior rather than the fools who have faith that I have the real issue with.

Nothing wrong with being "spiritual" or believing in a "higher power". Whatever gets you through the day. But proclaiming everyone else should believe in the exact same God you believe in, because a book told you that's the only true "God" is taking the piss. I have no time whatsover for that kind of tiny mind.

aye, they're not my cup as tea as much as the "this is the way and you will be damned if you don't go along with it too" mindset that is evident around the world causing wars and steering politics and all sorts of other shite it shouldn't have any influence on

loons the lot of them,  hard line atheists are no better, or worse, than flat earthers, extreme muslims, hardcore baptists etc etc

believe what you want, just keep it to yourself and your like minded peers, and don't try to impose it on everyone else

Mentalists

Could be comparable to a guy who said he encountered Angel Jibril

The irony level is off the scale here

Will certain posters require proof of this 'cave meeting' 🤔

My old Mum once told me that God is what you want him or her to be.

I have my personal beliefs and will never impose them on others... I have read many accounts of people adopting God after reading or meeting with folk who see to have a knack of convincing them, particularly with regards to Creationism.... it never appears to be a good ending to my eyes when they sacrifice everything (family and wealth) they have ever strived for.

Just to be clear, Islam is fucking mental too. You're all nutters, just with slightly different books.

Yep

But I've come across many people who are told what god is, and they had no choice in the matter

My folks subscribe it as they did their folks but they never imposed it on me  other than taking me to church and putting me into a Catholic school rather than not

because they couldn't leave me at home whilst they went to church, soon as I left school my choices were my own

As I said before, with my old man during his last days at Townleys, when he could barely speak, he managed to say out loud "thank you father for I am blessed"

Meant the world to me

Didn't seem appropriate to say "who's this father then"
