The Managerial Roundabout

Shrewsbury potting Cotterill is an odd one,

Spurs possibly seeking a new manager around Christmas, not sure how he will do.

Gerrard to Leeds is rumoured.

Uri Geller to Wigan?

I know he’s not a manager but Standard Liege fans seem gutted we’ve got Fergal Harkin to the extent that some are saying he saved them from relegation despite having no budget. Sounds positive.

  • Are you serious? The guy brought us some fucking brilliant moments  that we’ll never forget. Yeah, it didn’t end up great but ffs.

Fair point.  I'll rephrase it, City will be competing in the top 3 post-Pep as long as they don't replace him with Moyes, Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick, Ten Haag, Van Nistelrooy or Amorim.

Or Evatt. Don't forget Evatt.

38% win record in his 3 years at Stoke.

Schumy only got 9 months at Stoke and still managed over 40%.

Win percentages always get quoted, its weird that draws don't seem to count!  Or losses.

O'Neill lost 37% of his matches, so was unbeaten in 63%.  SS lost 41% of his games at Stoke, only unbeaten in 59%.   Who did best?

Its all a bit Evatt-esque to quote win ratios, we all know that can mean little.

And O'Neill took over Stoke with them bottom of the league in November, and finished 15th.   Not saying he's a great manager but it just shows how stats can be used for or against a manager.

Also done great with Northern Ireland FWIW although nobody should compare managing a country with managing a club.

What it does show, for me, is a bit of that ability to get a less well resourced outfit to produce results beyond its station. Also good at working with young players, that NI squad has a fair amount of youth about it.

He's assembled quite a strong looking coaching team with Phil Jones, Steven Davis and Damien Johnson who was already there

Charged with a job the opposite of a plumber - to prevent the turd from flushing.

Well at least he's got a proven record of taking Wigan down before.

Just seen his leaving video at Exeter, does seem like a decent bloke.

Yes he's a class act.

Wigan have a habit of getting likeable characters as managers - Ryan Lowe was an exception!  Thinking more of Leam Richardson and Mahoney recently.

Hopefully they get some new manager bounce - first 2 games Wed and Sat are Luton and Stockport, but I'm not holding my breath.

Fair point about the next two games.

Just a draw against Luton though.

Can have all three against Stockport.

A random point but noticing that Caldwell is back for his 2nd spell, and Richardson did the same, a quick look at Wigan's managers last few decades, its wierd how many have gone back, at least 7.

Are they just a bit lazy/short sighted/tinpot?

Ian McNeil (later Rioch's assistant), Bryan Hamilton, Ray Mathias, Graham Barrow, Steve Bruce, Richardson, Caldwell all managed at least twice, and not just for a few games like Jimmy Phillips did for us.

Hopefully Coyle's turn next.

Can only be to get back up north not if Wigan are a bigger club

As already mentioned Exeter have a tiny budget. They're fan owned and really struggle to generate income. Wigan even being on their uppers, will pay him at least double and they do have a much higher ceiling.

At this level more than any, contracts are short, job security is limited, so it's all about the money. Location also helps, but he won't be leaving for the same contract

Which is losing the most money though?

It is a sideways move, but his family are still up here.

May end up a downwards move.

Hope so . Double done over them just need them to get relegated now and us to go up and that will be an almost perfect way to exit league 1 for both clubs

Don’t give a monkeys whether Wigan stay up or not eventually but I do want them to win these next two to help us out.
