Mounts Kipper Posted April 25, 2024 Posted April 25, 2024 (edited) Passed away, never saw him play, think there was a song about him I heard in the lever end. Any older fans have any tales.. was top player in his pomp. Edited April 25, 2024 by Mounts Kipper Quote
Dr. Feelgood Posted April 25, 2024 Posted April 25, 2024 (edited) We got him toward the end of his career & before our Armfield improvement. We got a couple of seasons out of him. He was a class act, hard as nails. A lad in our class liked him so much he took the nickname 'Charlie'. He still had it a decade later. Edited April 26, 2024 by Dr. Feelgood Quote
passmosster Posted April 25, 2024 Posted April 25, 2024 Think that he was a folk hero at Sunderland. He could head a ball. Seem to remember that he had a good partnership with Marsh? Our problem in his time was scoring. Quote
RUREADY2ROLL Posted April 25, 2024 Posted April 25, 2024 Oh as I was walking down Bradshawgate i saw king Charlie Hurley and he said to me, are you going to see the famous Bolton Wanderers and cry was no surrender surrender or you’ll die well it went something like that Quote
bolty58 Posted April 25, 2024 Posted April 25, 2024 Big, uncompromising centre back. Took no prisoners. A bit like Dave McKay. Apparently none of the squad did any fucking about when he was around. What we need in a PM these days. RIP Charlie. Quote
Wanderlust Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 I remember him as being a proper old school centre half, good in the tackle and good in the air but very little in the way of skill on the ball and a million miles away from the modern CBs like Van Dijk who can distribute and pass - but in his time he was effective as the ball was lumped into the box a lot more. noxid Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 I once played a round of golf at Bolton municipal and I'm sure he was in a group of four players teeing off just before us. If I remember rightly he said hello to our group before driving his first ball into some trees. We had to wait ages for him to find his ball before we could start. Quote
Hoppy Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 Good old fashioned center half would not survive in today's game I'm sure I remember him having fisticuffs with Trevor Hockey when we played Sheffield utd Quote

I remember the only thing anyone ever mentioned him for was having a beard 😀 Quote

What was Roy Greaves? Half back or inside forward? Wingers were 7 and 11. Morgan and Thompson Phone Pep. He’ll know. He knows this modern day stuff Quote

As mentioned earlier in this thread, we bought him towards the end of his career. There were flashes of what a great player he had been previously. Worshipped at Sunderland. I think that he started his career at Millwall. Edited April 26, 2024 by Zulu Quote
