Remember Portsmouth at home in the Premier league days, they were in all kinds of shit. I think it was the start of all their financial difficulties. 0-1, Dioff spitting at one of their defenders at a corner. Not one our best days.

Whenever we play teams in the shit, not getting paid etc, they seem to raise their games. Not like our spinless lot who downed tools.

We were ok with that though. They weren’t getting paid. Just like we are just happy to have a club

Was saying on Saturday the one thing that has not gone wrong this season is the keeper being sent off with no replacement on the bench. We had a replacement last week , way things are going as soon as we do not Baxter will be off in first 10 minutes. 

Was watching city last night. You know, the one with the gaffer that our gaffer thinks he’s a disciple of. Anyway, what struck me was for all their patience and stringing balls across the pitch, trying to “work” the opposition and wing men turning back inside (sound familiar?) was just how quickly and regularly Ederson completely overlooked giving the ball to the centre backs and went straight in to Rodri. It’s almost like he wanted to avoid the big lumbering, gormless fucking stiffs stood at the side of him and get the football out quickly to their actual footballer to start getting at the opposition. 
 

if Evatt is going to change, and he needs to, that’s where he needs to start. Avoid the stiffs. Yep Sheehan got caught under pressure on sat and it led to a calamity. But he’s probably so used to being ignored in order for the centres backs to pass it amongst themselves he didn’t have a clue where to go hence going back to Baxter. Evatt NEEDS to find a way to get the ball out quicker and be more progressive. 
 

if he doesn’t alls that has happened is the club have delayed putting their family pet down to avoid the hurt here and now  cos nothing will change.

All true barry but can you please explain to me one presumably simple thing I’m missing? Why when we start from our 6 yard box do we need to take 5 or 6 passes, all with high risk, to get the ball to a position the keeper could have reached with either one throw or one kick and with minimum risk? This is a serious question because I genuinely don’t understand it. ☹️

It's to draw out the oppositions press and create space and channels further upfield.

When it works it's fantastic. When it doesn't it looks bloody awful.

Like BC says we need to skip a man or two.

Teams are wising up to it across all the divisions and you're seeing a more effective press resulting quite a few goals like the 4th at the weekend against us.

The bit City do well is the players aren't strictly ordered to always play short. Sometimes it will be a throw from Ederson to miss the defenders, sometimes a massive kick to Haaland or the wingers (not a hoof looking for a knock down, they're more precise than that). This keeps the opposition press off guard as they know they can't just press high like they do against us.

Our players aren't as good as City's and if even Pep is telling them not to go short all the time it beggars belief ours is. Or the occasion we won't it is just a hoof. We need to mix up the game with some longer targeted passes

I’ve surprised myself.

I don’t often like fan based analysis on suggested ways of playing/improving. And I’m sure there will be a hell of a lot more to it than what you’re suggesting…

But that observation makes sense to me.

If only it could be executed in L1 with limited players! 😃

The concerning part for me now is these tweaks (the box midfield and whatever it is that follows) won’t work because the way we play needs clarity of thought, belief, strong minds and confidence, all of which are in very short supply at the moment.

And their in lies the problem. Everyone wants to adopt the same principles but don’t have £50m + players that can actively deliver it. Not saying that’s an exclusive rule as there as some lower end prem and some champ teams that play a similar way. However the lower down the food chain you go the more prone you are to mistakes so therefore need to be more pragmatic and less wedded to an approach even though it maybe slowly but surely suffocating you 

It really does feel like Evatt has got them all over the summer and in training every week trying to play chess, whilst the rest of the league is playing football. 

Getting out of the league is made to look very very simple sometimes, remarkable that he thinks he knows better.

Cheers Gonzo but I’d imagine when the keeper puts the ball on the six yard box and two defenders are either side of him it’s a pretty good clue what we’re going to do. I’m also assuming teams are smart enough to know why we’re doing it as you say and are forewarned not to get drawn out. I’d say most teams have sussed this now which is why it doesn’t work any more?

Obsessed with the possession and phases of play etc. 

Said it before, it's a curse on football and only Pep can work the magic spell.

He evolves and adapts quicker than anyone else.

Our versions work for a season then get found out sharpish.

As much as I agree with sentiment, I tend to be more amazed people raise their game as opposed to those who down tools. I certainly wouldn’t be going full pelt for nowt

It probably only takes 1 bad apple to down tools or have a sulk on and it quickly spreads.

Everyone has probably worked somewhere where there is a moody tw*t gaslighting others and generally bringing the whole team down, times that by 2-3 others and people don't wanna be there.

Then again you have maybe worked with people that are all fantastic, good workers , great fun, full of knowledge & experience and you enjoy being around them.

Think of some successful teams from the past where maybe they weren't the best footballers in the world but they would die for the team, late 70s BWFC, Early 80s Watford, late 80s Wimbledon, etc full of characters!!!!.

The biggest influence on mood and attitude is the manager and I have no idea how anyone listening to his recent interviews especially the one on Saturday thinks he is going to lift the dark cloud over the club

City played 3 2 4 1 yesterday with right back pushed into midfield. The 4 in midfield are very much focused on attack but know they have to work back. Grealish for instance works harder than anyone.

We play 5 2 3, so whereas City have 6 in midfield we have 2. It is bat shit crazy. 
 

We do not play like City other than we expect the centre halves to be ball players, playing a right footed player at left centre half fucks that side up as it is too slow.

Rotherham have done it numerous times under Warne and he did the same at Derby, albeit at the second attempt

Exactly - he's projecting. He is the dark cloud. That's what he needs to realise and change. Or else he's not going to succeed.
