Bolton's Wage Bill

Sums up how we are still punching above our weight and how good a manager Sam is. Also buries the myth that we pay high wages which is often thrown at me by ignorant Southern mates.

Wanderers' incredible wage gap

By Gordon Sharrock

THE incredible story of how Bolton Wanderers have achieved success on a shoestring is highlighted in a report into Premier League wages.

Two seasons ago, when they finished sixth and qualified for Europe, Wanderers were 16th in the salary table.

Only Portsmouth, West Brom and Norwich had lower wage bills.

Figures published today show that Wanderers paid their players ??25.4 million in the 2004-05 season less than a quarter of the Chelsea wage bill and considerably less than the average of ??39.3m.

But the signs are that their Premiership rivals are taking a leaf out of the Bolton book with clubs refusing to commit themselves to expensive contracts. As a result, wages have dropped for the first time since the League was formed in 1992.

While top flight stars in England continue to take home more than their European counterparts the average Premiership player earns ??800,000 a year Premiership clubs saw their total wage bills fall by 3.2 per cent in 2004-05, the most recent available figures.

The figures, which do not take into account the recent ??1.7 billion broadcasting rights deal for Premiership matches, show top clubs paid wages of ??559m down from ??583 the previous season.

The drop suggests that efforts to stem the tide of wage inflation, championed by Wanderers since they returned to the Premiership in 2001, are starting to pay off.

There had been a danger that wages were spiralling out of control but the latest figures, published by Deloitte and Touche, show a marked slow down.

Dan Jones, a partner in the Sports Business Group, said: "The need to save clubs from themselves' with a salary cap now seems far less important than five years ago."

after releasing okocha and ngotty, possibly no campo or nakata, that will be another 5 million of the wage bill per year, giving us plenty of scope to bring in new recruits, if we can persuade any one to come. :D

That is looking like a big 'if' at the moment!!!!

Isn't there a team missing somehwere?

If we're 16th in the table and there are supposedly only 3 teams below us, that makes 19.

There's 20 teams in the Prem.

Crystal Palace were in the extra team but they refused to release information so they couldn't be put in the table.

Ther are only 19 teams listed, because Crystal Palace weren't on it, as they had no comparable data from the previous season, due to them being a Championship team.

wouldn't that also apply to Norwich as well though?
