frank_spencer Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 I know it, you know it and 99% of the population know it but it dosen't stop politicians, of all parties, proposing even more green taxes in many areas. My point is that the government must accept some of the blame for this collapse and probably more to come. As an example, I have a flight booked to Prague in November and the cost breakdown is as follows; Airline flight cost 27.99 Taxes & Charges 41.51 Total cost 69.50 It is expected that more low cost airlines will follow XL into administration so it will be interesting to see the Governments reaction to the situation. looking at flights to houston the other day. Cost of flight - ?85 Taxes & charges - ?288 fecking rip off!

Do the planes not pay reduced ( or even zero) tax on their fuel? They should be taxed more, the taxpayer is subsidising these cheap flights. Do you REALLY think that the cost of flying you to Prague and back is ?70?
Smiffs Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 Last time I booked a flight, in fact any time I have booked a flight, I've had to pay up front. I'm left wondering how a business that gets money up front for its wares, wares that are on average 95% utilised, and still goes f?ckin bust.

Do you REALLY think that the cost of flying you to Prague and back is ?70? Horses vulvas. 100 folk per plane, ?7k, 6 or 8 flights a day..........thats ?20 million a year, per plane. Its worked for Stellios well enough. Fuel duty for commercial use (plant and machinery, not road use) in our game is 5%. To subsidise something you need to give something, I somehow doubt Stellios gets a wedge off the taxpayer to put against his fuel bill.
Sweep Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 looking at flights to houston the other day. Cost of flight - ?85 Taxes & charges - ?288 fecking rip off! I've booked to go to Chicago in December, similar story: Cost of Flight: ?85 Taxes & Charges: ?248.80 an outrage!
Sweep Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 the taxpayer is subsidising these cheap flights.I thought it was illegal for Airlines to be subsidised by their governments (which is really the tax payer) - so I'm not sure you're right there
superjohnmcginlay Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 Booked flights Weds neet through Freedom Flights to Tenerife, Booked em on the credit card so should have some recompense, hopefully, trying to look at other flights except the vultures have put the prices up now feckers
Danny G Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 I've booked to go to Chicago in December, similar story: Cost of Flight: ?85 Taxes & Charges: ?248.80 an outrage! Out of that 248 quid tax id say around 160 quid is hidden as a fuel surcharge due to the high cost of fuel, other airlines i.e Emirates include this cost in the Fare so the tax is only around 55 quid

C86 Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 One thing to re taxes on flights. If you book a flight and you don't go on the flight for what ever reason then you can get the the tax part back. The airlines don't pay the tax part of the flight to the IR until the flight has landed at the destination. The number that land x the tax per person = amount to IR. If they resell your seat then only one persons tax is sent to the IR. If you ring them they will refund the taxes back to you, if not they will keep it, if you don't then that tw@t Darling keeps it.

Traf Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 So what does the tax amount to on a ?120 flight? a Tenner? ?15? a mighty ?20 maybe? Up to ?80 sometimes!
Carlos Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 I've heard enough about families who've been planning their dream holiday in Tenerife for 3 years now.
Winchester White Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 We booked with Travel City Direct and not XL but I have been told if it was on a CC then we would get it back but not on a debit card! It depends if you booked a package holiday or a flight only. I think package holidays are covered but flights aren't so ATOL will cover a package and your CC provider will cover a flight.

That's essentially what the expert on tele said yesterday, obviously there's people on here that know better like. Maybe they should get them on next time instead?
